In1936,Grahammadeherdefiningwork,Chronicle,whichsignaledthebeginningofanewerainmoderndance.Thedancebroughtseriousissuestothestageforthegeneralpublicinadramaticmanner.InfluencedbytheWallStreetCrashof1929,theGreatDepressionthatfollowed,andtheSpanishCivilWar,itfocusedondepressionandisolation,reflectedinthedarknatureofboththesetandcostumes.
Grahamcontinuedtodancepasttheageofseventy.Onceagain,shewasmetwithcriticismfrompeoplewhocametowatchhershows.Butshedidn’tgiveup.Herlastcompletedballetwas1990’sMapleLeafRag.ADancer’sWorldisanintroductiontoGrahamandherwork.Shetellsaboutherdancesandherdancegroupshowssomeoftheirmethods.
MarthaGrahamreceivedmanyawardsduringherlifetime,includingthePresidentialMedalofFreedomin1976.Shewasthefirstdancertoreceivethecountry’shighestcivilianhonor.Shediedin1991.In1998,Timemagazinelistedherasthe“DanceroftheCentury”andasoneofthemostimportantpeopleofthetwentiethcentury.
