ProgresscontinuestomadeattheLivingLab,locatedat5508SouthUniversityDrive,Fargo.ThissiteisownedbytheCityofFargoandleasedtoRiverKeepers.Itwillbecomeasitefordemonstratingriparianrestorationandotheractivities.AnoldsmallsheepbarnonthesitewasrecentlycleanedandrepairedbyBrettCardonaspartoftherequirementsforhisEagleScoutaward.The“WoodieShop”willserveasaworkshopandstoragefacilityforourCavityReplacementProgramwhichseekstoinstallwoodducknestingboxesthroughoutthemetropolitanriverfront.Brettisseenintheattached photoatour“ribboncutting”ceremony.
TherocksloperetrofittingattheFargo'sSouthDamontheRedRiverwascompletedearlylastweek. Anadditionalportionofthisproject,tobecompletenextspring,includesbuildingaportagetrailandcanoeramp,andrelocatinganexistingemergencyboatramp. Theintentoftheprojectwastoincreasesafetybyeliminatingthehydraulicrollereffectbelowthedam,facilitatefishmigration,createhabitatforfishandotheraquaticorganisms,andimprovedownstreamwaterqualityontheRedRiver. Itinvolvedplacingrockfillandboulderstosimulatenaturalrapids. Fishcannowswimovertherapidsandhaveaccesstoalargersegmentoftheriver,allowingmovementfromDrayton,NDtoHickson,ND. Thisiscriticalduringspawningseason,sinceprimespawninghabitatsexistintheupstreamreachesoftheRed. Whentheremainingrampsandportagearecompleted,theprojectwillprovidemuchsaferrecreationalopportunitiesforcanoeistsontheriver. Theprojectcostis$870,000andtooktwomonthstobuild. Fundingwasprovidedbyfederal,stateandlocalagencies. RisingSunConstruction,Inc.ofFargowasthecontractor.AdditionalinformationcanbeobtainedbycontactingBobatRiverKeepers.
InApril2004,RiverKeeperswillholditsannualmeeting.Atthemeetingnewboardmemberswillbeelected.Namesofpotentialboardmembersarenowbeingaccepted.PleaseforwardnamestoRiverKeepers.Potentialcandidateswillbeinterviewedby RiverKeepers' NominatingCommitteebeforetheirnamesareplacedontheballet.

ClaireEidenschinkdippedapotintoatrashcanfilledwithwater,thenracedtoabucketabout10feetaway.
Herclassmatescheeredasshedumpedthecontentsbeforeacompetitorfromanotherschool.
Thethird-graderfromHorace,N.D.,wasoneof1,400areaelementarystudentswhoparticipatedinthefifthannualRedRiverWaterFestivalinMoorhead.
Thefestival,whichbeganTuesdayandendstoday,teachesstudentsaboutwaterusinghands-onactivities.
EidenschinkandherHoraceElementaryclassmateswerelearningWednesdayhowdifficultabasictasklikecollectingwaterwouldhavebeenbeforeplumbing.
Thebucketstudentsracedtofillonlyheld5gallonsofwater,exhibitvolunteerJessicaMartintoldthethirdandfourthgradestudents.Theaveragefamilytodayuses200gallonsofwateraday,shesaid.
"Welearnedhowwaterwasusedandcleaned,"Eidenschinksaid."Welearnedtheyusedtousewindmillstopumpthewater."
Expertstoldstudentswherewatercomesfromandwhereitgoes.

Studentsworetagsnamingaspecificplantoranimal.Theywerethentoldtopasstheballofyarntoaspeciestheirtagdependedon.Soonawebwasformed.
Studentsthensawnoplantoranimalcouldbetakenoutofthewebwithoutimpactingalltheotherspecies.
"Welearnedaboutthewetlands,"saidMalenaMastel,afourth-graderatLongfellowElementaryinFargo."Welearnedwhatlivesthereandwhytheyneedeachother."
Thefestival,whichisfreetostudentsandschools,istheresultofweeksofplanningbyRiverKeepers,alocalnonprofitgroupfocusedonpromotingtheRedRiver.
