Although“romantic”storiescanrefertonarrativesdealingwithadventure,mystery,orthesupernatural,moreoftentheyareaboutlove.Inthissense,romanticstorieshavebeenpopularformany,manycenturies;infact,theyareaboutasoldasliteratureitself.IntheWest,romanticlovewasakeyelementinbothoftheancientGreekepics TheIliad and TheOdyssey,composedsomewherearoundthe8thor9thCenturyB.C.,aswellasinmanyofthegreatplaysandpoemswrittenbythe16thcenturyBritishwriterWilliamShakespeare.Romanticlovehasbeenakeyelementincountlesspoemsthroughouttheworldformanycenturies.InChineseliterature,lovehasbeenimportant,too.ItplayedanimportantroleinCaoXueqin’s DreamoftheRedMansion (红楼梦).Chinahasalsohaditstraditionallovedramas,suchas ThePeonyPavilion (牡丹亭)and ThePeachBlossomFan (桃花扇).Thusromanticloveisaneternalthemeinliteratureofalltypesandlovestoriescontinuetomakeupavastbodyofliterature.Todaymanyshortstoriesarewrittenwithloveastheirfocus;thisisalsotrueofmoviesanddramaswatchedontelevision.Atypicalromanticplot,whetherinanovel,shortstory,playormovie,followsarathersimpleplotlineinwhichthefollowinghappens:
boymeetsgirl;theyfallinlove;fateorotherpeoplecauseobstaclesintheirromance;boyfinallywinsgirl,oftenthroughvirtuousacts.
Althoughromanticstoriessometimesaretragedies,asinShakespeare’s RomeoandJuliet orChina’straditional ButterflyLovers (梁山伯与祝英台),asreaders,wemostoftenenjoyreadingaboutgoodpeoplewhofindfulfillmentinlove.Itisespeciallynicetobeabletoreadaboutrealpeoplewhosefaithfulnessinloveisfinallyrewardedwithhappiness.SuchwasthecaseinthelivesofRobertandElizabethBarrettBrowning,thesubjectsof ATrueLoveStory.DespitetheobstaclesofElizabeth’spoorhealthandherfather’sunnaturalwishforhisdaughtersnevertomarry,theyoungcoupleperseveredintheirlove,married,andlivedahappylifetogether.Thisisjustas“romantic”asanyfictionalstory.In DetourtoRomance,faithfulnessandperseverancearealsokeyfactors.HarryhasfaiththathisgirlfriendMaywillmeethimatthetrainstationasshehadagreed;thusheiswillingtotakeajobthereandlookforherforthreeyearsbeforeseeingherandfindingoutthemisunderstandingthathadcausedhernottobethereinthefirstplace.In AppointmentwithLove,amutualloveofliteratureleadstoanexchangeoffriendlylettersbetweenayoungladylivinginNewYorkCityandasoldierservingoverseasduringWorldWarII.Herfaithfulnessinwritingtohimforthirteenmonthsfinallyleadstofeelingsofloveonhispart.Yet,inordertomeether,hemustpassatestofcharacter;fortunately,hedoes.
