Duringthe1970s,Gombebecameadangerousplacetowork,whereoftentherewasfightingbetweensoldiers.ManyforeignersfledtheregionbutJanestayed.AdifferentproblemdevelopedinGombeinthe1980s.Thehumanpopulationintheregionwasincreasing.AsaresultofthistherewereonlyaboutahundredchimpanzeeslivinginGombe.Janerealisedthatsomethinghadtobedone,soshesetabouthelpingthelocalcommunitytogrowmoretreesforthemintheregion.
