CNumberedamongthedropoutsandothertechnologicalmisfitsaremanyofouryouthwho,supportedbyaffluentparents,havenothadtoworrymuchaboutbecomingproductivecitizens.Suddenlyweareawareofalargeandgrowinggrouplivingontheleavingsofahighlyproductivesociety.Earliersocietieshavehadtheirleisureclassesbutneverbeforeinhistoryhassolargeaproportionofasocietybeenfreeoftheworriesofseekingthebareessentialsoffood,shelter,andclothing.Theperplexingproblemfacingusishowtoabsorbthesetechnologicaldropoutsandmakethemproductive.

DThisgrowinghordeofeconomicparasitestakesonaveryseriousmeaninginaone-member,one-votedemocraticsociety.Stillintheminority,theirpresenceislargelymanifestedinsocialmeddling—incontemplationaboutthewelfareoftheirfellowman.Onesuchmovementwevaguelycallconsumerism,inwhichactivistschampionissueswhichappeartobebeneficialtoconsumers.Thetermimpliesprotectionoftheconsumer,butthefloodofproposalsforwaysandmeansofprotectingtheconsumerarenotgenerallytraceabletothoseseekingprotectionforthemselves.Tothecontrary,thespecificissuesofconsumerismareinitiatedbythosewho,forassortedreasons,seektoprotectothersfromharm.

ETheconsumeractivistobviouslyrangefromselfishtounselfish,fromdishonesttohonest,fromthoughtlesstowellinformed.Whateverhismotives,theycontendsthatconsumersshouldbeprotectedfromphysicalandeconomicharm,thatconsumersshouldbeinformedandeducatedinproductknowledge,thatconsumersshouldhaveachoiceinthemarketplace,andfinallythatconsumersshouldhaveproperlegalredressforwrongs.Suchvirtuousaimsseemundebatableuntilonerealizesthatunderconsumerismtheyaresubjecttothird-partyinterpretationwhichmayormaynotbeintheconsumerinterest.Thethird-partyvaluescanalwaysbemadetoappearrational,andareoftenvigorouslysupportedbythegeneralpublic.Asaresult,innumerablelaws,andregulationsarerapidlydisplacingthefreedecisionoftheindividualinthemarketplace,andtherightoftheconsumertochooseincreasinglybecomesamockery.
