Shefailedtogetworkasasinger.ShemetEtienneBalsanandbecamehismistress.Hegaveherdiamonds,dressesandpearlstoshowhisaffection.SheworkedatatailoringshopduringthedaywhileshewaswithBalsan.Shesoonlefthimandtookoverhisapartment.ShehadanaffairwithoneofBalsan’sfriends,CaptinArutherEdward“boy”Capel.HefinancedChanel’sfirstshops.Hisstyleinspiredhertocreateherownlook.
In1910shebecamealicensedmoodiestandopenedaboutiquenamedChanelModes.In1913sheopenedanotherboutiqueinDeauvillewheresheintroducedclothing.In1915sheagainopenedanotherBoutiquecalledChanel-Biarritz.By1919shewasarecognizedcouturiere.In1922sheintroducedherfirstperfumeChanelNo.5.Itbecameandstayedpopularsinceitsbirth.During1925shemetVeraBateLombardi.ShebecameChanel'liaisontoanumberofroyalEuropeanfamilies.In1939Chanelclosedallhershopsbecauseitwastoher,notatimeforfashion,becauseofthewar.ShebecameinvolvedwiththeNazipartyandinreturnwasarrested,butallchargesweredropped.Returningin1954,shecamebacktothefashionworld.Mostofhernewcollectionwasnotpopular.SheintroducedPeaJacketsandbellbottompantsforwomen.Shewasstillworkinguntilshediedin1971.
