In1880,fourteen-year-oldMatthewHensonlovedtohearsailorstelltalesoftheirexcitinglivesatsea.Thetravel,theadventure,thedanger,andthesteadypaywereallattractingyoungHenson.Oneday,hefoundajobasacabinboyonabeautifulshipcalledtheKatieHinds.Forthenextfiveyears,Hensonsailedaroundtheworld.Withthehelpoftheship’scaptainandothermembersofthecrew,Hensonlearnedmathematics,navigation,history,geography,andmanyothersubjects.Bytheti
mehelefttheKatieHindsin1885,Hensonwaswelleducatedandhadbecomeanexcellentseaman.
Unabletofindworkanywhereelse,HensontookajobinahatshopinWashington,D.C.Onedayin1887,amancameintobuyahat.Theman,RobertPeary,askedtheownerifheknewanyonewithexperienceatsea.PearywouldsoontraveltoSouthAmericafortheU.S.government.Heneededexperiencedmentoaccompanyhim.Theshopownerknewabouthisyoungemployee’sskillsandexperienceonoceanjourneys,soheintroducedPearytoHenson.
Usinghismap-readingandsailingskills,Hensonprovedhimselftobeaworthyandsmartseaman.PearysoonmadeHensonhisassistant,andtheybecameclosefriends.OnedayPearytoldHensonabouthisrealdream:
tobethefirstmantostandon“thetopoftheworld”attheNorthPole.HeaskedHensontohelphimmakehisdreamcometrue.Overthenextfiveyears,thetwoexplorersmadetwotripstogethertotheArctic.However,theywerenotabletoreachthepoleeithertime.Thecold,wind,andicewereworsethaneitherofthemhadeverimagined.
In1908,PearyandHensonwerereadytomaketheirfinalattemptatreachingtheNorthPole.Bothmenwereoverfortyyearsold.Theyearsofhardshipinthearcticcoldhadmadethemsufferalot.Thiswouldbetheirlastchance.WithfourInuitguides,theymadeamadrushstraightacrosstheicetowardthepole.Peary’sfeetwereinjuredandhehadtobepulledonadogsled.InApril1909,Henson’sinstrumentsshowedtheywerestandingattheNorthPole.TogetherHensonandPearyplantedtheAmericanflaginthesnow.
