ChemStarMSQuickGuide

1.ANALYSISUSINGMASSSPECTROMETER

QuickStartupGuideforThermostarPfeiffer-MS

RemovethetwoscrewsandthelockingscrewlocatedatthefrontbottomoftheThermostarMSbeforeoperatingtheunit.

1.Makesurethatthereissufficientlengthofcapillaryextendingoutofthecapillarytubing.Atleast2inchesofthecapillaryisrequiredtoextendout.

2.Connectthecapillarytotheback（analyticalvent）oftheChemStar.Refertofigure1,2and3fortheconnection.Figure2indicatesthedirectionofthegraphiteferrule.

3.OncetheMS-capillaryconnectionstotheChemStarhasbeenestablishedturnonthepowertotheMSbyuseoftheswitchonthebackoftheThermoStar.Thefanwillturnonatthispoint.

4.OnthefrontdisplayscreenoftheThermoStar,（figure4）presstheOK/SELbuttonthreetimes（youwillhearabeepsound）toturnontheturbopump.Theturbowillpumpdownuntiltherotationspeedreaches1500Hzor90000rpm.Thatwouldbeabout2-3minutestoreachfullspeed.

5.Thenormalpressurewouldbearound1.28E-05mbaruponfullspeedoftheturbopump.

6.Iftheinstrumentisstartingupforthefirsttime,thenabake-outoftheunitisnecessary.

7.Toperformthebake-outmanually,thefollowingstepsareneeded.

a）Openthe“Quadera”softwarefromthecomputer.

b）Seefigure5oncetheQuaderaopensup.

c）Clickon“PTMxxxxx”asshowninfigure6toopenupthelivemode.

d）Thenselectthe“SEMMID”asshowninfigures7and8.

e）Thescreenshowingmultipleiondetectionasshowninfigure9willopenup.

f）ClickonthearrowtoturnONthefilament.（AmessagewillaskifyouwanttoturnOnthefilament）.Clickyestoturnonthefilament.

g）ThefilamentmustbeturnedONwhenperformingabake-out.

h）OnthefrontdisplayscreenoftheThermoStar,selecttheOK/SELbuttontomovebetweenfunctions.Onthefunctionstab,selectthedownarrowkeytoreachbake-out.Selectthebake-outmanual,andthenhitoktostartthemanualbake-outsession,preferablyovernight.

i）Tostopthebake-out,clickonOK/SEL,thenmovebetweenfunctionstogotobake-outmanual>bake-outstop.Thiswillstopthebake-outsession.

8.Now,youarereadytoscantheMSsignals.Toeditthemasses,clickon“edit”tab.（seefigure9）.Thiswillthenopenupthemassesscreenasshowninfigure10.

9.Thesoftwareispre-loadedwithupto7masses.Toaddtheeighthmass,performthefollowing:

a）Selectthe“MID”scanasshowninfigure11.

b）Thenclickon“AddMIDtask”,andthendraganddropitontothemeasurescreen.

c）Theaddedtaskwillbedisplayedonthemasseslistonthemeasurescreen.Seefigure12.

d）Nowgotothe“edit”tabandselecttheeighthmassandchangethe“mass”and“display”totherequiredmassnumberandnamethatisneeded.

10.Afterenteringthemasses,gotothemeasuretabandclickthemeasurearrowbuttontostartmeasuring.Andthiswillpullupthescreenasshowninfigure13.

11UsetheChemStarsoftwaretoflowgasesthroughtheTCDandtheanalyticalventtodetectthemasses.

12Openthe“Shamus”softwarebyclickingonthe“Shamus”icononthedesktopofthecomputer.Thiswillopenupthescreenasshowninfigure14.

13TheshamusisthesoftwarecommunicationlinkbetweenQuaderaandtheChemStarsoftwareviaOPC.Themassesareautomaticallylistedontheshamusscreen.Toupdateanymasschangesonthe“Quadera”totheshamussoftware,clickonthe“getparameter”button.

14OntheChemStarsoftwarescreen.Goto“accessories”andthenselect“MassSpectrometer”.Thiswillopenupthescreenshowninfigure15.ClickonthelinkONbuttontoestablishcommunicationoftheQuaderaandtheChemStarsoftware.

15WhenanexperimentisinitializedwiththeChemStarsoftware,theMSsignalswillbeautomaticallyrecordedtotheexperimentrundata.

SHUTDOWN

Toensurethatapropershutdownisdone,followthestepsbelow:

Closetheshamussoftwarelinkscreen.ThenturnoffthemeasurementandthenthefilamentshouldbeturnedoffandtheSEMdetectormustbeturnedoff.Refertofigure9.ThenclosetheQuaderasoftware.

16OnthefrontdisplayscreenoftheThermoStar,presstheOK/SELbuttontoselectFunctions>ShutDown.Awarningsignwillsay“TurningOffvacuumwithsensorON,mayharmfilament”.ThenpressOKtoshutdown.OncetheOK/SELkeyisselected,theturbopumpwillshutdown.Thismaytakeupto10minutes.Oncetheturbopumpisshutdownthefrontpaneldisplaywillsay“systemok”.
