(1)WhyhaveIchosentoattendcollege?

Ihaveputthisquestiontomyselfatmanytimesandinvariousformsduringthepastthreeandahalfmonthswhichhaveconstitutedthefirstsemesterofmyfreshmanyear.HaveIcomebecauseofparentalinfluence,orbecauseIhavesomegoalofmyownthatIwishtopursue?

Afterponderingthesequestionsonmanyoccasions,IhavefinallyreachedtheconclusionthatIhavecometocollegenotforonesinglereason,butformany,andthatitissomethingthatItrulywanttodo.

(2)Originally,myparentsdidinfluencemyopinionsabouteducationingeneral.Mymother,anelementaryschoolteacher,wasalwaysproudofmyacademicsuccesses,butsheneverreallypushedmeordemandedthatIachieveexcellentgrades.However,fromthebeginningofmyschooling,myparentsseemedtoassumethatIwouldattendcollege,andbythetimeIreachedhighschool,Ihadbecomeaccustomedtothatideaaswell.

  (3)WhenIenteredhighschool,Ienrolledinthecollegepreparatoryprogramofferedthere,lookingaheadfouryearstocollegeattendance.However,asIproceededfurtherthroughhighschoolintomyjuniorandsenioryears,IbecamegenuinelyinterestedinmanyofthesubjectswhichIwasstudying.Chemistry,physics,andcalculuswerethecourseswhichheldmyinterestmoststronglyandIfeltthatIwantedtocontinuetostudythoseareasbeyondthehighschoollevel.Uptothatpointinmylife,IhadalwaysclaimedthatIwantedtoattendcollege.butdidn’trealizewhyuntilmyhighschoolcareerdrewtoaclose.

  (4)Finally,Ibegantorecognizeinmyselfastrongdrivetoobtainknowledge.IknewthatIwouldnotbecontenttosimplyendmyeducationalcareerwithhighschoolandentertheworkingworld.Itrulyfeltaneedtocontinuelearninginordertogainabetterunderstandingoftheworldaroundme.Myfinaldecisiontoattendcollegeseemedanaturalone,andmychoiceofengineeringasafieldofstudycameeasilyaswell,sincetheprofessionfitwellwithmyacademicpreferences.

  (5)ThefactthatIenjoylearningandgainingknowledgewasmymainreasonforchoosingtoentercollege,butImustadmitthatitwasnotthesolereason.Intoday’sworld,acollegeeducationhasbecomealmostessentialifonewishestocompeteinthejobmarket.Inthenextseveralyears,thistrendwillsurelycontinue,withaBachelor’sdegreebecomingalmostindispensableifonewishestofindaworthwhileposition,andaMaster’sdegreebecominghighlydesirableforadvancedpositions.Althoughitmaysoundmaterialistic,IfeltthatattendingcollegewasapracticalandnecessarystepwhichItooktoensureasecurefutureformyselfandmyfamily.Imademychoicetostudyengineeringprimarilyonthebasisofmyloveofmathematicsandthephysicalsciences;however,thefactthatitisawell-paidandrespectedprofessiondidhavesomeinfluenceonmyfinaldecisiontostudyengineering,ratherthanapuresciencecurriculum.Eitherfieldwouldhaveallowedmetostudythosesubjectswhichholdmyinterest,butthedecisiontopursuetheonewhichwouldultimatelybemoreprofitablewasnotadifficultchoicetomake.

  (6)AthirdreasonthatIamattendingcollegeisthatIhavealwayshopedthatIcouldmakeacontributiontotheworld.Iknewthatacareerinvolvingscienceandtechnologywouldgivemethebestopportunitytodothis.Ialsoknewthatinordertopursuesuchacareer,Iwouldberequiredtogothroughcollege.Hopefully,thiswillenablemetosomedaymakeacontributiontotheexpansionofthefrontiersofsociety’sknowledge,andtoinsomewaybenefitmankind.

  (7)Finally,Ichosetoattendadiversifiedcollege,asopposedtoapurelytechnicalinstitute,becauseIfeelthatcollegeshouldallowapersontogrowinareasotherthanpureacademics.Itshouldalsoexposethatstudenttoavarietyofsocialandpoliticalideas,helpingtoexpandhismentalhorizons.AttendingRutgersUniversityhasdefinitelyallowedmetocomeintocontactwithawidevarietyoflifestyleswhichcouldonlybefoundtogetheronacollegiatecampus.Additionally,whileIamabletomajorinascientificfieldatRutgers,Iamabletosimultaneouslytakecourseswhichexploreotherfieldsofstudyandallowmetobecomeamorediversifiedandwell-roundedperson.ThisoverallgainofgeneralknowledgewhichisavailableonlytothecollegestudentisanotherreasonthatIwasluredtowardthepursuitofahighereducation.

  (8)Thus,Icametocollegenotforonereason,butforseveraldifferentones.ItwassomethingthatIhadplanned,evenwithoutfullyknowingwhy,forseveralyears.Itwascertainlythenextlogicalstepinmyeducationalcareerafterthecompletionofhighschool.However,onlyinmyfinaltwoyearsofhighschooldidIactuallybegintorecognizeinmyselftheinherentdesiretoobtaininformationandlearningwhichpursuetheothergoalswhichIhadsetformyself.IalsoknewthatIwantedtobecomeamorediversifiedperson,andthatacollegeeducationwasthebestmeanstoattainthatend.
