nouncedculturaldiversitybroughtaboutbyPueblo,HopiandNavajonations

andalargeHispanicpopulationthatrepresentscloseto50%ofstate.WhenI

wasinkindergartenIattendedabilingualschoolinLemitar,asmalltown

insouthernNewMexico.MostofthechildrenatthisschoolwereHispanic.T

hisallowedmeataveryearlyagetoexperiencealanguageandculturediff

erentfrommine.Myfatherhasalwayshadakeeninterestinpeoplefromoth

ercountriesandculturalbackgrounds.Asalibrarian,myfatherhasalways

encouragedmetoreadnotonlyWesternPhilosophy,butEasternPhilosophyas

well.Inaddition,heinspiredmetoseelifefromadifferentperspective.

Toalargeextent,andbymostdefinitions,Ihavealwaysbeenanon-traditi

onalandunconventionalstudent.Iwenttoahighschoolwithacurriculumt

hatwasaschallengingformeasanycourseIhavetakenincollege.Thishi

ghschoolwasuniquebecausewestudiedeverythingfromtheoriginofWester

nCivilizationtomodern-dayWesternthought.Anotheruniquefeatureofthis

schoolwasthatattheendofoursenioryearwehadtogiveanoralpresen

tationinfrontofahostofpanelistsfromSt.John’sCollegeinSantaFe,

NewMexico.Thisexperiencehelpedmedevelopmyabilitytothinkcritically

andpresentacogentthesis.Itforcedmetogrownotonlyasastudent,bu

tmoreimportantly,asanindividual.WhenIgraduatedfromhighschoolIreb

elledagainsttraditionaleducationanddecidednottoapplytocollege.Thi

sdecisionwastothegreatdismayofmyparents,whohadenteredcollegeim

mediatelyafterhighschool.Withmuchresistance,IenrolledatSantaFeCo

mmunityCollege.Thiswasjusttosatisfymyparents’wishes,andIspenton

lyonesemesterthere.AlthoughIwantedtostudyandcontinuetolearn,Iy

earnedtoreachouttopeopleandfindadifferentmodeofstudy--onewhic

hwouldallowmetounderstandmyselfbettersothatIcouldrelatebettert

otheworldaroundme.Withthisgoal,IdecidedtoattendtheNewMexicoAca

demyofMassageandAdvancedHealingArts.Theschoolprovidedmewithauni

quemind/bodybalancethathashelpedmebecomeamorewell-roundedperson.

IstudiedsubjectsthatrangedfromAnatomyandPhysiologytoYogaandTaiC

hi.Aftergraduating,IgotajobattheSantaFeSportMedicineInstitutea

saPhysicalTherapyAssistant.IusedMassagetechniquestohelppeoplewho

wereinjuredinautoaccidentsorsportingevents.Thistypeofworkallowe

dmetodirectlyhelppeople--thepeopleImassagedtoldmethatthepain

theyexperiencedpriortothemassagehadsubsided.Relievingthepainsoft

hesepeoplenurturedinmeasenseofpurpose.Inaddition,itincreasedmy

interestinEasternPhilosophy,makingmewanttolearnmoreaboutAsia.Ibe

gantoreadmanyclassicalChinesetextstofurthermyknowledgeaboutChine

sePhilosophy.SoonIdevelopedaprofoundinterestinlearninghowtoread

andspeaktheChineselanguage.TheopportunitiesforstudyingChinesewere

andChina.WhenIarrivedinTaiwan,Iremembergettingofftheairplaneand

hearingeveryonespeakingChinese.EverythingIsawandheardwasunfamilia

rtome.Seeingadifferentworldmadeahugeimpactonme;Icanstillreca

llhowexoticmyenvironmentwas.InTaiwan,IwentthroughanintensiveChi

neselanguageimmersionprogram.SlowlyIbegantofeelmorecomfortableliv

ingthere,asIlearnedtocommunicatewithpeopleinChinese.Iwasinvited
