(CNN)--Since2008,theUnitedStateshasseenseverallandmarksurgeriesinfacetransplantation,givingpeoplewithseverelydeformedfacesnewlivesthroughpartiallyortotallydifferentfacesfromdonors.

Receivinganewfaceisanythingbuteasy.Thesurgeryrequireslonghourswithmanymedicalspecialistscollaboratingtomakeithappen.Thepatientthenhastoadjusttothenewface,biologicallyandpsychologically.

Thereisacomplexrehabilitationprocesswherethepatientlearnshowtoeat,speakandmakefacialexpressionsagain,saidDr.MariaSiemionow,directorofplasticsurgeryresearchattheClevelandClinic.

"Thesurgicalprocedureitselfoftransplantisrelativelystandard,"Siemionowsaid."Themajorproblemistheselectionofthecandidate--whoisandwhoisnotthefacetransplantcandidate."

Forinstance,doctorsattheClevelandClinicwouldnotconsidersomeonewhoistotallyblindbecauseoneoftherequirementsistobeabletoexerciseone'sfaceinfrontofamirror,"tomakethefaceadjustedtothebrain,"shesaidaboutthisstillemergingfieldofsurgery.

Surgery:

December2008

ConnieCulpreceivedthefirstnear-totalfacetransplantintheU.S.Shewasinjuredbyabulletin2004whenherhusbandshother.Culpwasleftpartiallyblind,unabletosmellandspeak,anddependentonasurgicalopeninginhernecktobreathe.(Theworld'sfirstfull-facetransplantwasdoneinSpainin2010.)

A22-houroperationattheClevelandClinicgavehermostofanewfacefromadonor:

AnnaKasperofLakewood,Ohio.

 

CulpmetthefamilyofthedonorinDecember2010.Shesaidaroundthesametimethatshewashappywiththetransformation.

"Icansmellnow,"shetoldCNNin2010."Icaneatsteak,Icaneatalmostanysolidfoods--soit'sallgettingbetter."

Siemionow,wholedthesurgery,saidThursdaydoctorsatthehospitalhavebeenseeingCulponamonthlybasissincethetransplant.ShedescribedCulpas"fullyintegratedbackinhercommunity."Sheis"ahappygrandmother"withaboyfriend,andsheis"veryjoyful."

Culp,now49,isabletosmile,frownandtalk,andherspeechiseasilyunderstood,Siemionowsaid.Before,Culpdidnothaveanose;now,shecanbreathethroughit.ResearchershavedeterminedthatCulp'sbrainacceptsthenewface,basedonactivityinkeybrainareas.

Sheisanadvocateoforgandonationandtravelstodeliverspeechesaboutherexperience.

"She'saverypowerfulpersonalitytoactuallyshareherexperiencetohelpothers,"Siemionowsaid.

Surgery:

JamesMakidestroyedtheentirecoreofhisfacewhenhefellontotheelectrifiedthirdrailataBostonsubwaystationonJune30,2005.

Healsosufferedsevereburnsonhisarmsandhands.

Hisbreathingwasimpaired,andhecouldn'tspeakcoherently.Eatingwasalsoimpossible;hewasfedthroughatubeinhisstomach.

 

Ateamofsurgeonsandotherspecialistsworkedfor17hoursatBoston'sBrighamandWomen'sHospitaltogivehimanewfacefromadonor.Maki,whoworedenturesbeforetheaccident,alsogotnewteethduringtheoperation.Buttheteethdidn'ttakeandeventuallybegantobreak.

He'snowintheprocessofgettingeightfalseteethimplantedintohismouth,andhe'llhaveanewsetofdentures,too.

"I'mgoingtohaveallmyteeth,"Maki,63,saidThursday."I'mlookingforwardtoeatingalotofthings--likeIhavetoeatstuffthat'sreallysoft.OnceIgettheteethin,Icaneatwhatever.Cashews.WhateverIlike."

Hesayshecan'twaittoeatarib-eyesteak.

Makiisalsomakingfacialexpressionsagain.Hesayshehashisgooddaysandbaddays.He'stakenupthegameofbridgeathislocalseniorcenter.

DallasWiens

DallasWiensunderwentthefirstfullfacialtransplantintheUnitedStates.WhenWienswaspaintinghischurchasavolunteerinNovember2008,hisheadgottooclosetoahigh-voltagepowerline.Helostalmosthisentirefacefromtheburns.

DoctorskeptWiensinamedicallyinducedcomafor90days.InMarch2011,hereceivedanewfaceina15-hourprocedureatBrighamandWomen'sHospital.

"WhenIwokeup,andIwasabletofeelIhadfeaturesagain--eyesandanoseandamouth--Ievensaidoutloudthatthiscouldnotbemedicallypossible,"WienssaidinMay2011."ButhereIamtoday."

WiensrecentlymarriedJamieNash,awomanwhosufferedburnsonmorethan70%ofherbodyafteracarcrash.

MitchHuntersufferedsignificantinjuriesina2001caraccident,inwhichhereceivedasevereshockfromahigh-voltageelectricalwire.

TheIndianamanwasthesecondfull-facetransplantrecipientintheUnitedStates.

A14-hoursurgerygaveHunteranose,eyelidsandfacialanimationmusclesandnerves,BrighamandWomen'sHospitalsaid.

Inmostofhisface,Hunternowhasnear-normalsensation.Hisspeechhascontinuedtoimprove.

"Mitchreportsthatheisveryhappywithboththeaestheticandthefunctionaloutcomesofhisoperation,andenjoysspendingasmuchtimeaspossiblewithhisfamilyandfriends,"thehospitalsaidinastatement."Herecentlyhastakenonactivepursuits,includingrunningandtrainingforenduranceraces.HealsohasajobinhishomestateofIndianaandisplanningtoobtainadegreeininformationsystems."

CharlaNashwasmauledbyafriend'schimpanzee,leavingherwithoutanose,eyelids,lipsorhands.

BrighamandWomen'sHospitalsurgeonsperformedafullfacialtransplantina20-hourprocedure.

Initially,shealsoreceivedtwonewhandsthroughtransplantationaswell.Afewdayslater,though,Nashbecamesick,andthehandswereremoved.

Thefirstpost-surgerypicturesofherwerereleasedinAugust2011.

Shesaidatthattime:

"IwillnowbeabletodothingsIoncetookforgranted...Iwillhavelipsandwillspeakclearlyonceagain.Iwillbeabletokissandhuglovedones.Iamtremendouslygratefultothedonorandherfamily."

RichardNorrisfromVirginiawasagunaccidentin1997thattookawaymuchofhisupperandlowerjaws,inadditiontolipsandnose.Heneededatracheatubetobreathe.Heworeasurgicalmaskfor15years,hidinghisdeformitiesfromtheworld.

AteamofspecialistsattheUniversityofMarylandMedicalCenterperformedtheprocedure,whichlasted36hours.Thesurgeryinvolvedreplacingbothjaws,aswellastongue,andskinandunderlyingnerveandmuscletissue,andanentiresetofteeth.Essentially,hisentirefacewasreplacedexceptforhiseyesandthebackremnantofhisthroat.

DoctorssaidNorris'wasthemostextensivesurgeryofitskind.

NorrissaidinastatementinOctober,"Iamdoingwell.Ispendalotofmytimefishingandworkingonmygolfgame.Iamalsoenjoyingtimewithmyfamilyandfriends."

The37-year-oldspokeataUniversityofMarylandfundraisinggalaonSaturday,hisfirstpublicappearancesincethesurgery,accordingtheahospitalspokesman.

"Thankyoufortheyearsspentpreparingtogivemeanewlife,"hesaid,accordingtoCNNaffiliateWJZ.

Inmemoryofthedeceaseddonor,hesaid,"Thankyou,Joshua.Wewillalwaysbegratefultoyouandyourfamilyforthisgiftoflife."

CarmenBlandinTarletonbecamedisfiguredafterherestrangedhusbanddousedherwithindustrial-strengthlye.Thelyeburnedmorethan80%ofherbody,andtheburnswentallthewaythroughherskin.Childrenwouldrunawayfromherbecauseofherappearance.

TarletonwasapprovedforafullfacialtransplantinDecember2011,andittook14monthstofindadonor.Thetransplantsurgery,performedbyspecialistsatBrighamandWomen'sHospital,took15hours.

Today,Tarletoniscompletelyblindinoneeyeandpartiallyblindintheother,butsheisstillabletoliveonherowninherapartmentinVermont.

ShetoldCNNsheespeciallylooksforwardtogainingthestrengthandcoordinationtokissthemanshecalls"theloveofmylife."

"Ican'tpuckerandfeelyet,"shesaid."ButIamlookingforwardtothatday.Iknowthatdaywillcome."
