Now,thesametrans-AtlanticteamhavecombinedPETaseandits“partner”,asecondenzymecalledMHETase,togeneratemuchbiggerimprovements:

simplymixingPETasewithMHETasedoubledthespeedofPETbreakdown,andengineeringaconnectionbetweenthetwoenzymestocreatea“super-enzyme”,increasedthisactivitybyafurtherthreetimes.

Theteamwasco-ledbythescientistswhoengineeredPETase,ProfessorJohnMcGeehanandDrGreggBeckham.ProfessorMcGeehansaid:

“GreggandIwerechattingabouthowPETaseattacksthesurfaceoftheplasticsandMHETasechopsthingsupfurther,soitseemednaturaltoseeifwecouldusethemtogether.Ourfirstexperimentsshowedthattheydidworkbettertogether,sowedecidedtophysicallylinkthem.Ittookagreatdealofwork,butitwasworththeeffort—weweredelightedtoseethatournewenzymeisuptothreetimesfasterthantheseparateenzymes.”

TheoriginalPETaseenzymediscoveryindicatedthefirsthopethatasolutiontotheglobalplasticpollutionproblemmightbewithingrasp,thoughPETasealoneisnotyetfastenoughtohandlethetonsofPETbottles.Combiningitwithasecondenzyme,andfindingtogethertheyworkevenfaster,meansanotherleapforwardhasbeentakentowardsfindingasolutiontoplasticwaste.PETaseandthenewcombinedMHETase-PETasebothworkbydigestingPETplastic.Thisallowsforplasticstobemadeandreusedendlessly,reducingourrelianceonfossil(化石)resources.
