LongbeforethearrivalofEuropeansontheCanadianprairie(thewidegrasslandsofwhatisnowcalledAlberta,SaskatchewanandManitoba),theFirstNationspeoplelivedinaharmoniousrelationshipwiththeirnaturalsurroundings.Everyitemoftheirculture,fromsewingneedlestohomeswasfromnature.Theirhomeswerecalledteepeesandwerelikelargetentsmadefromtheskinsofdeer.Thesepeoplearedifferenttribes(部落)whotravelledfromplacetoplacefollowingtheanimalstheyhuntedorthegrowthoftheberriesandfruitsonthebushesandtrees.

Theyhadhorses,althoughhorsescametoNorthAmericaafterescapingfromtheSpanishexplorerswhobroughtthemheretoexploretheareasaroundMexicoandTexas.Boysandgirlswerebothexpertriders.Theydidnotusesaddlesorreinsorstirrups;theyrode“bareback”.Theirclothesweremadefromdeerskinsandbuffalo(水牛)skinsanddecoratedwiththepartsofotheranimals—tailsfromsquirrelsandgophers,quillsfromporcupinesandthebonesofbirds.

Thesechildrenofnaturedidnoteverhavetogotoschool.Theydidnothavetostudytogetintoatopcollege,nordidtheyhavetoworryaboutfindingajobaftergraduation.Thisdoesnotmeantheirlifewaseasy.Thewinterswereverylongandverycoldandthereweresometimeswarsbetweentribes.Therewerealsotheverygreatdangersinvolvedinthebuffalohunt.Huntersrodeattopspeedbesidethehugebuffaloshootingarrowstobringthemdown.Thechancesofabuffaloturningsuddenlyoroffallingoffthehorsewereverygreat.Wemustrememberthattherewerealsonohospitalsinthosedays.

Evenso,theyoungpeopleofthetribesmusthaveenjoyedaverypleasantlifestyle:

Cultureshockbeginswiththe“honeymoonstage”.Thisistheperiodoftimewhenwefirstarriveinanewculturewhereeverythingisstrangeandexciting.Wemaybesufferingfrom“jetlag”butwearethrilledtobeinthenewenvironment,seeingnewsights,hearingnewsoundsandeatingnewkindsoffood.

Unfortunately,thesecondstageofcultureshockcanbemoredifficult.Afterwehavesettleddownintoournewlife,workingorstudying,buyinggroceries,doinglaundry,orlivingwithahome-stayfamily,wecanbecomeverytiredandbegintomissourhomeland.Allthelittleproblemsinlifeseemtobemuchbiggerwhenyoufacetheminaforeignculture.Thisperiodofculturaladjustmentcanbeverydifficultandleadtothenewarrivalrejectingorpullingawayfromthenewculture.

Thethirdstageofcultureshockhappenswhenyoubegintorealizethatthingsarenotsobadinthehostculture.Yoursenseofhumorusuallybecomesstrongerandyourealizethatyouarebecomingstrongerbylearningtotakecareofyourselfinthenewplace.Thingsarestilldifficult,butyouarenowasurvivor!

Thefourthstagecanbecalled“ateaseatlast”.Nowyoufeelquitecomfortableinyournewsurroundings.Youcandealwithmostproblemsthatoccur.Youmaystillhaveproblemswiththelanguage,butyouknowyouarestrongenoughtodealwiththem.Ifyoumeetsomeonefromyourcountrywhohasjustarrived,youcanbetheexpertonlifeinthenewcultureandhelpthemtodealwiththeircultureshock.
