Theairistaintedwithunnaturalfumesofgrease,wood,andburntelectricaltape.Oilslicksstainthefloor.Thickwoodenshelvessagunnervinglyclosetobucklingundertheweightofoldhousepaintandpowertools.Aworkbenchliesburiedbeneathpapers,rulers,cans,andmetalshards.Anuncomfortablegrowlpoursfromthewaterheater.Mostpeoplewouldn’tdescribemygrimygarageaspleasant,butIlovespendingmyfreetimehere.It’swhereIbuilta2fttrebuchetinsixthgrade,a4fttrebuchetinseventhgrade,andplantobuildan8fttrebuchetthiswinterbreak.It’swhereIbuiltabattlebotandslappedanArduinomicrocontrollerontoptogiveitintelligence.EversinceIsatwatchingjetsshaketheskyandexplosionsrockthescreeninthemovieIronManasastunnedsixthgrader,I’vespentweekendsexperimentinginmygarage,tryingtolearneverythingIcanaboutengineeringandrobotics.
Sure,outsideofmygarageIlovewildlifeandhiking,history,andweirdfoods.Iloveclassicrock,jazz,andmaybeevensecretlyKatyPerry.Nevertheless,I’vealwayshadalifeplancenteredonrobotics:
gotoagreatcollege,learnrobotics,buildrobots,getaBernesemountaindog,andlivehappilyeverafterinabeautifulforesthome.ItseemsstrangethatI’vecommittedmyselftoroboticssoeasilydespitemymanyinterests,butinreality,roboticscombinesnearlyallofthem.Computerscience,electricalengineering,andmechanicalengineeringarecrucialtotherobot,butcombinethemwithbiology,astronomy,music,orecology,andthat’swhenroboticsbecomesamazing.Icouldhelpthesickwithrobotsthatgivesurgeonsmoredexteritywhileoperating.Icouldhelpthepoorwithaffordable,robot-madeproducts.Icouldaidtheelderly,replacethelimbsofwoundedwarriors,andkeepfirefightersfromharm’sway,allwithrobots.AlthoughtheserobotsmaynotbethecrimsonandgoldIronMansuitthatfirstgotmeinterested,Ilovetherealisticandheroicpossibilitiesinthefieldofrobotics.
AlmostasexcitingasimaginingtherobotsIcouldbuild,isimaginingwhereIcouldbuildthem.IcouldbecomeaprofessorandresearchcuttingedgeA.I.algorithms.Icouldbecomeanentrepreneurandbringmycreationstomarket.Icouldevenbecomeanemployeeforatechcompanyanddevotemyselftoitslatestinnovations.Maybenextyeararoundthistime,IwillevenbestudyingontheFreshmanQuad.WiththeLCSRroboticslab,theminorinrobotics,atop-notchengineeringprogram,abeautifulcampus,incredibleseafood,andwhatthevisitingadmissionscounselordescribedasa“vibrantacappellascene,”JohnsHopkinswillbothmakecollegefunandsatisfymyinnernerd.Butfornow,Iwillgoonworkinginmygarage,competingforspacewiththefamilycar.

StringTheory—Joanna
Ifstringtheoryisreallytrue,thentheentireworldismadeupofstrings,andIcannottieasingleone.Thispastsummer,Iappliedformyveryfirstjobatasmall,busybakeryandcaféinmyneighborhood.IknewthatifIwerehiredthere,Iwouldlearnhowtouseacashregister,preparesandwiches,andtakecakeorders.IimaginedthatmybiggeststrugglewouldbecateringtodemandingNewYorkers,butIneverthoughtthatitwouldbethebenignactoftyingaboxthatwouldbecomebothmybiggestobstacleandgreatestteacher.
OnmyfirstdayofworkinlateAugust,oneofthebakery’semployeeshastilyexplainedtheprocedure.Itseemedsimple:
wrapthestringaroundyourhand,thenwrapitthreetimesaroundtheboxbothways,andknotit.Irecitedtheantheminmyhead,“threetimes,turnit,threetimes,knot”untilitbecamemymantra.Afterobservingmultipleemployees,itwasclearthatanyonetyingtheboxcouldcompleteitinamatterofseconds.Forweeks,Ilaboredendlessly,onlytowatchthestrongandsmallpiecesofmyprideunraveleachtimeItried.
AsIrushedtodiscreetlyshovehalf-tiedcakeboxesintoplasticbags,Icouldnothelpbutwonderwhatwaswrongwithme.IhavelearnedMozartarias,memorizedthefunctionalgroupsinorganicchemistry,andcalculatedtheanti-derivativesoffunctionsthatIwillprobablyneveruseinreallife—allwithamodestamountofenergy.Forsomereasonthough,afteramonth’seffort,tyingstringaroundacakeboxstillleftmeinaquandary.
Astheweeksprogressed,myskillsslowlybegantoimprove.OfcoursethereweredayswhenIjustwantedtothrowallofthestringinthetrashanduseScotchtape;thissenseofdefeatwasneitherwelcomenorwanted,butremarkslike“Oh,youmustbenew”fromsnarkycustomerscatapultedmydeterminationtogreaterheights.
Itshouldbemoredifficulttodevelopaninternalpulseandsenseoflegatoinapieceofmusicthanitistofindthenecessaryrhythmrequiredtotieabox,butthisseeminglytrivialtaskhasclearlyprovennottobetrivialatall.ThedifficultiesthatIencounteredtryingtokeepasingleknotintactareproofofthis.Thelackofcooperationbetweenmycoordinationandmyunderstandingleftmefrazzled,butthesatisfactionIfeltwhenIsuccessfullytiedmyfirstboxwasalmostasgreatasanyIhadfeltbefore.
Scientistsdevelopingstringtheorysaythatstringcanexistinastraightline,butitcanalsobend,oscillate,orbreakapart.IamthankfulthatthestringIworkwithisnotquiteastemperamental,butIstillcringewhensomeoneasksforachocolatemandelbread.Supposedly,thestringsuggestedinstringtheoryisresponsibleforunifyinggeneralrelativitywithquantumphysics.TheonlythingIamresponsibleforwhenIusestringisdeliveringsomeone’spietothemwithouttheboxfallingapart.Tyingacakeboxmaynotbequantumphysics,butitisjustascrucialtoholdingtogetherwhatmatters.
IambeginningtorealizethatIshouldnotbeashamedifittakesmelongertolearn.Ipersist,andIcontinuetotieboxeseveryweekendatwork.EventhoughIoccasionallybackslideintofeelingsofexasperation,IalwaysrewrapthestringaroundmyhandandstartoverbecauseIhavelearnedthatthemostgratifyingvictoriescomefromtenacity.Iftheuniversereallyiscomprisedofstrings,IamconfidentthatIwillbeabletotiethemtogether,evenifIdohavetokeepmyfingerscrossedthatmyknotsholdup.

IfeelperfectlycontentatWoodrowWilsonSkateboardPark,acementswellinthegroundlocatedjustwestoftheeasternmostpointofthenorthsideofChicagoandtrappedperenniallyinthementalspaceinhabitedbyfourteen-year-oldangryyouths.Outsideofhomeandschool,itistheplacewhereIhavespentmostofmylife.Itsterrainsofamiliar,Icouldnavigateitblindfolded,towedonmyboardbyapackofferaldogs.MuchofwhatIknowoflife,Ilearnedthere.
Aseaofnodsandhandshakesandbackpatswelcomesmyeveryarrivaltothismunicipaloasis.Here,Iamknown.CalledvariouslyMor,BobMorley,Mordog,Mo,MoMoney,or(longstory)TomPork.Itistheonlyplaceonearthwhere(wereanelectionevertobeheld)Icouldalmostcertainlybemayor.Amongthestrange,sometimesdowncast,andessentiallygoodpeoplehere,Ihavefoundanotherfamily.Ineedthemasmuchastheyneedmeandasmuchasweallneedskateboarding.Thisfour-wheeledtoybringsusinnerpeace.Skateboardingisastandingmeditation,atimetoputconsciousthoughtasideandletprimalimpulseguidethebodythroughvariousjumpsandbalancingacts.Iturntoskatingintimesofjoyandintimesofstrife,tocelebrateagoodday,escapewriter’sblock,socialfailures,orotherminortragedies.
