Teaching'sthetoughestjobthereis.Inhisnewmemoir,"TeacherMan,"FrankMcCourtrecallstellinghisstudents,"Teachingisharderthanworkingondocksandwarehouses."Nottomentionwritingacolumn.Icanstareoffintothemiddledistancewithmychin(下巴)inmyhandanytime.Butyougomentallysouthforfiveminutesinfrontofaclassoffifthgraders,andyouaresunk.

Theaveragenewteachertodaymakesjustunder$30,000ayear,whichmaynotlooktoobadforatwenty-somethingwithnomortgage(抵押贷款)andnokids.Butsoonenoughthenewteachersrealizethattheycanmakemoremoneyandnotworkanywherenearashardelsewhere.Afteralifetimeofhearingtheoldlegendsaboutcushy(舒适安逸的)hoursandsummervacations,theyfigureoutthatearlymorningsareforstudentswhoneedextrahelp,eveningsarefortestcorrectionsandlessonplans,andweekendsandsummersareforsecondandeventhirdjobstotrytopaythebills.AccordingtotheDepartmentofEducation,oneineveryfiveteachersleavesafterthefirstyear,andalmosttwiceasmanyleavewithinthree.Ifanybusinesshadthatrateofturnover,someonewoulddosomethingsmartandstrategictofixit.Thisisn'tanybusiness.It'sthemostimportantbusinessaround,thegardenersofthelandscapeofthehumanrace.

Unfortunately,thecurrentwayofdealingwithproblemsineducationistakendirectlyfrombusinesspractice,andit'saterriblefit.Insteadofsimplyacknowledgingthatstartingsalariesarewoefullylowandcommittingtoincreasingthemandfindingthemoneyforreasonablerecurringraises,politicianshavewasteddecadestalkingaboutsomethingcalledmeritpay(奖励工资).It'saconceptthatworksfineifyou'remakingtoys,butkidsaren'ttoys,andgoodteachingisn'tanassemblyline.

Thereisnothinginthisworldthatcomeseasy.Imuststandtallandlookforward,tobeeversoreadyforwhatstillliesahead.Peopleoftenfeelsorryforthosewhowerebornwithsometypeofdisability.Buttheircompassion(怜悯)ismisplaced.

Yes,Imaynotbeabletorunasfastorperformcertaintasks,butmydisabilitygivesmeabetterlookatlifeandallthat'saroundme.Iwanttobeseennotasadisabilitybutasapersonwhohas,andwillcontinueto,bloom(成长).SoIdecidedtobecomeanadvocate(倡导者)onbehalfofdisabledAmericans,tofightforourrightsthatforsolonghavebeenignored.
