WhenBabbagewasworkingatCambridge,anewideaoccurredtohim.Hewantedtoconstructa calculatingmachinetoworkoutthesolutionstomathsproblemsnotonlywithcorrectnessbut alsowithaspeedbeyondthepowerofanyhumanmind.Hismachinecouldsolveproblemsinvolving longrowsoffiguresinonecontinuousoperation.

    BabbagecontinuedhisworkinLondonforfouryears.Thenhishealthbrokedown,andhehadtotakealongholidayabroad.WhenhereturnedtoLondonin1828,hewasattheendofhisresources.Manybillsremainedunpaid.Hischiefassistantandco-workersquarreledwithhimandleftwithmanyexpensivetools.Foroneyearnoworkwasdone.Duringthisperiod,Babbage,whosemindwasalwaysactive,suddenly thoughtofacompletelynewideaforthemachine.Herushedtomeetthegovernmentofficialstoexplainhis newidea.Butthistime,theywereunwillingtohelphim.Foreightyears,theyrefusedtosaywhetherthey wantedthemachineornot,andtheirfinalanswerwas"No." 

    From1828to1839,BabbageheldthepositionofprofessoratCambridgeverysuccessfully.Buthisgreatestworkwastheunfinishedcalculatingmachinewhichstoodcoveredindustinhishouse.Itwasthe beginningofthemoderncomputer.
