TheLordoftheRings,oneofthebestsellersinthenewmillennium(一千年;千年期),wasmadeupofthreeparts—TheFellowshipoftheRing,TwoTowers,andTheReturnoftheKing.Millionsofpeoplehavereaditinover25languages,butfewerknowabouttheauthorandthehistoryofcompositionofthecreativemasterwork(极品,名著).

JohnRonaldReuelTolkienwasborninSouthAfricain1892.Hisparentsdiedwhenhewasachild.LivinginEnglandwithhisaunt,Tolkienandhiscousinsmadeupplaylanguages,ahobbythatledtoTolkien'sbecomingskilledinWelsh,Greek,Gothic,OldNorseandAngloSaxon.

AftergraduatingfromOxford,TolkienservedinWorldWarⅠ.In1917,whilerecoveringfromtrenchfever,hebegancomposingthemythology(神话学;神话)forTheRings.AsaprofessorofAngloSaxonin1930satOxford,TolkienwaspartofaninformaldiscussiongroupcalledtheInklings,whichincludedseveralwriters.ThegroupwassoonlisteningtochaptersofTolkien'simaginative(富于想象力的,运用想象力)workTheHobbit.

HobbitwasanameTolkiencreatedforalocalpeoplethatcouldbedescribedashalfsizedmembersoftheEnglishruralclass.Hobbitsliveinhillsideholes.One

ofthem,BilboBaggins,looksfortreasureswithagroupofdwarves.Ontheway,hemeetsthetwisted(反常的,变态的),pitifulcreatureGollum,fromwhomheseesagoldenringthatmakestheholderinvisible.

OneofTolkien'sstudentspersuadedheremployer,publisherAllen&Unwin,tolookatadraft.Thechairmanofthefirm,StanleyUnwin,thoughtthatthebestjudgeforachildren'sbookwouldbehistenyearoldson.Theboyearnedashillingforreportingbackthattheadventurewasexciting,andTheHobbitwaspublishedin1937.

ItsoldsowellthatUnwinaskedforacontinuation.Overadozenyearslater,in1954,TolkienproducedTheLordoftheRings,aseriesofbookssocreativethattheyholdreaders,newandold,aftertheirpublication.
