AfteralunchwiththeorganizersofChina's"CleanYourPlate"campaign,theplatesarealmost-butnotquite-clean.Agricultureisabigcontributortoclimatechange,andyetglobally,roughly1/3offoodiswasted.

“Chinaisrichnow,peoplefinallyhavesomethingtospend,”hesays.“TheotherthingisChina’sdiningculture.Ifthere’ssomethingleftintheplates,theyhavetheirface.Theyhaveasenseofsecurity.Ifyouhavemorethanyouactuallyneed,it’ssomethingtobeproudof.”

ThecampaignersalsostartedpostingonWeibo,China’sversionofTwitter,whichhassome400millionfollowers

The“cleanyourplate”campaignhasreceivedmillionsofmentionsonWeibo,andprominentcoverageintheofficialPartynewspaperThePeople’sDaily,andledprime-timeeveningnewsonthegovernment’sCCTV-1.Notbadforanideadreamedupbyafewfriendsaroundadiningtable.

Inthemonthssincethecampaignwaslaunched,manyrestaurantsinBeijingandbeyondhavestartedofferingsmallerportions,encouraginggueststotakedoggybags,andgivingoutcertificatestothosewhocleantheirplates.

Recently,"ClearYourPlate"campaignismoreandmorepopularinsociety,whichadvocatessavingagainstwasting.Thecampaigndrawsourattentiontowastingoncampus.Somestudentsarenoticedtothrowawayalotoffoodinthecanteen.Asisoftenthecase,somelightsarestillonwithnobodyinclassrooms.What'smore,manyastudentspendsmuchmoneybuyingunnecessaryitems.

AsfarasIamconcerned,it'shightimethatwefoughtagainstwasting.Here'remysuggestions.Firstly,Ithinkourschoolshouldcarryoutvariousactivitiestoarousestudents'awarenessofsaving.Secondly,relevantrulesandregulationsaresupposedtobemadetopunishthosewhowastethings.Mostimportantly,weshouldformthehabitofsavingfromnow.Itiseverybody'sdutytosaveresources.

Chinahaslauncheda“CleanYourPlate” （“光盘行动“）initiativeinanefforttoreducefoodwaste.Thiscampaignfocusesonzerowastewhendininginrestaurants,encouragingdinerstoorderlessandtakeanyleftoverfoodhome.

Foodwasteoncollegecampusesisalsoproblematic,withover 1/3ofcollegecafeteriafoodbeingwasted.Studentsdonothaverefrigeratorsormicrowavesintheirrooms,sotakinghome“leftovers”isnotanoption.Collegeundergraduatesalonewasteenoughfoodtofeed 10millionpeopleannually.

Ofcourse,platewasteisnotspecificallyaChinaproblem,andcorruptofficialsarenotthemainculprit.Intotal, 30-50%ofallfoodiswastedglobally,includingfoodwastefromharvestandtransportationaswellasfromindividualconsumption. 

1.ChinaFoodSafety

Recentpublicityonfakemeatand deadpigsfloatingdownriversnearShanghai havere-focusedglobalattentionontoChina’sfoodsystem,whereverylittleseemstohaveimprovedsincethemelaminescandalin2008.Concernsoffoodorigin,safehandlingpractices,pesticideuseandlackofstandardqualityassurancecontinuetoproliferatesocialandmassmediaoutlets. 

“TheChinesearevoicingtheirconcernsoverfoodsafety withtheirbuyingpower.” Thisbuyingpowerisalsotranslatingintonegativeinvestorsentiment.

Itisuniversallyacknowledgedthatthesafetyoffoodiscloselyrelatedtoour

health.itishightimethatwepaidattentiontothisgraveissue.

Thereareseveralreasonsforthisseveralproblem.Firstandforemost,someproducts,

tohugeprofits,makefakecommoditiesorproductsofpoorquality.Inaddition,themonitorroleoflawsandregulationshasnotbeenimplementedinastrictway.Lastbutnotleastthepublicespeciallycustomersfrompoorfamilies,arenotalertenoughtothesafetyoffood.

Peoplecannotlivewithoutfoodeveryday,sofoodsafetybecomesourtopconcernnaturally.

ourgovernmentisveryconcernedaboutfoodsafety.Inrecentyears,ithaspassedlawsandregulationsonfoodsafetyandspecialofficeswereestablishedtooverseethefoodsafetyproblems.Also,asconsumers,oureffortswillbeagoodcontributiontoeliminatetheseproblems,too.Onlywhenfoodsafetyisn’tatroublesomethinganymore,canwehaveabrightfuture.

TuhaoandtheriseofChinesebling

Tuhao

AnewwordhassuddenlybecomewildlypopularinChina-"tuhao"-whichlooselytranslatedmeans"nouveauriche".Therehavebeenmorethan100millionreferencestotheword"tuhao"onsocialmediasinceearlySeptember.

InChinese"tu"meansearth,and"hao"meansrich.Tosaysomeoneistuhaoistoimplytheycomefromapoorpeasantbackground,andhavemadeitrichquick-butdon'tquitehavethemanners,orsophisticationtogoalongwithit.It'sliketheterm"nouveauriche",saysProfessorSteveTsangattheSchoolofContemporaryChineseStudiesinNottingham-buthasevenmorenegativeconnotations,suggestingacertainvulgarity.

汉语中"土"是地的意思,"豪"就是有钱.说某某是土豪,那就是这人出身低贱,突然发了大财,举止不得体,心中无城府.诺丁汉大学现代汉语研究学院的SteveTsang教授说,土豪和暴发户差不多,但是贬义更浓,含粗鄙之意.

今年九月流行一个段子,说一个郁郁寡欢的有钱人想过简单的生活,于是问道一和尚.不成想这和尚却说：

"土豪,我们做朋友吧！

"于是该词便有了新用法.

Chineseinternetusersarehighlycreativeintheiruseoflanguage,andareconstantlyinventing,andre-inventingwordsasawayofgettingpastcensorshiprules,saysTsang.Butinthiscase,itspopularityseemstobedowntothefactthatitencapsulatesChina'schangingsocietysowell-manypeoplesneeratthosewithwealth,butaresecretlyjealous,saysTsang.

中国网民们实在太有才了,把汉字用得妙趣横生,他们不断造词或者给旧词赋上新意以逃过审查,Tsang教授说.不过,具体到土豪这个词,它的流行生动地再现了中国当下变化中的社会:

很多人表面上嘲笑有钱人,心里却十分艳羡.

裸官：

这些年，中国出了许多“裸官”，当然不是说他们不穿衣服，而是指一些贪官把存款、妻儿都安排到国外，准备逃亡他国。

英语大概没有类似的说法，翻译时只能解释为：

NakedofficialsunpopularinChina

TheChinesegovernmentisstrengtheningitsefforttomonitorofficialswhosewifeandchildrenliveaborad,assuchofficialsarepronetopowerabuse.

Theterm"nakedofficial"hasbeenselectedasoneofChina'stoptenbuzzwordsof2009byChineselinguists.Itreferstotheofficialswhosefamilymembershavemovedoverseas,whiletheythemselvesworkinthecountryaloneusuallywiththeothercountry'svisainhand. 

Nakedofficialsarebelievedtohaveagreatertendencytowardcorruptionbecausethepresenceoftheirspousesoverseasmakesitconvenientforthemtofunnelbribemoneyandotherill-gottengainsoutofthereachoflocalauthorities.Ifcaughtintheirmisdeeds,suchofficialsalsohaveaneasymeansofescape:

theysimplytakeupresidencewiththeirspousesabroad.

Inrecentyears,reportshavegrownincreasinglycommonofcorruptChineseofficeholdersandtheirfamiliesfleeingthecountryafteramassinghugeamountsofmoney.ManynakedofficialsarebelievedtohavesoughtshelterinrichcountriesthatdonothaveextraditiontreatieswithChina.

The"nakedofficial"phenomenonhasattractedgreatattentioninChina,astherehavebeenmanycaseswheresuchofficialshavebeenfoundtobecorrupt.
