MotivatingtheStudentsthroughMultimedia

1.Introduction

Itiswellknownthatinterestisthekeytosuccessandinterestisthebestteacher.WhattheteacheristodoinclassistoleadthestudentsandmakethemhaveinterestsoflearningEnglish,andprovideconditionsforlearningtotakeplace.NowIcanteachjuniorGradeOnestudents.Ifound:

usuallyweteachershardlyusedteachingaids,thustheclassseemedtobedullandbored,theclassroomatmospherewasgettinglessandlessactive.Aquitepartofstudentsidledinclass.Theyweretakingalessactiveroleinclassroomactivities.Somestudentsevendroppedout.BasedonsomeapproachesthatIhavelearnedfrom“EnglishLanguageTeachingMethodology”,andconsideringthecharacteristicsofmystudents,Idecidedtousemultimedia.inmylessonstomotivatethelearners,makemyclasslively,andhelpthemkeepuptheirEnglishlearning.

2.ProblemAnalysis

Tomakeyouteachsuccessful,youmustbewithyourstudents,befriendlytothem,andknowthem,understandthem.WhenIfoundmystudentshadlostinterestinlearningEnglish,Ithinkitisnecessarytoinvestigatewhytheywereshowinglessandlessinterest.SoIinterviewsomeofthemandheldaquestionnaire.

Theirreportswere:

1)Somegoodstudentsreportthatthemethodofstudyingnewwordsismechanical.Theclassroomatmosphereisdullandboring.

2)Somepoorlearnersreportthatduetotheirlackofvocabulary,theycan’tremembernewwordsandcan’tfollowtheteacherinclass.

3)Manystudentsreportthattheyareafraidofbeingcriticizedanddon’tanswerquestionsbravely.Thus,theylosttheirinterests.

4)Theteacher’smethodisdullandlacksvarieties.

3.PossibleSolutions

Afterthequestionnaire.Ithoughtoversomewaysofhavingclass.Thefollowingsolutionswereadopted:

1)Usingmultimediatomotivatestudentsandhelpthestudentsunderstandandlearnnewwords,sentences,dialoguesandsoon..

2)Creatingthecomfortablesafeclassroomatmosphereandagoodteacher-studentsrelationship.

3)BuildinginterestingactivitiesandplayingsomeinterestingEnglishgamestogoovertheknowledge.

4)Givingmorepraiseandlesscriticizetoencouragethemtospeakbravely.

4.ProjectObjective

ThisprojectisaimedatmotivatingthestudentsinlearningEnglishandencouragingthemtospeakbravelybyusingmultimedia.

5.ProjectHypotheses

Thinkingoftheagefactorsofthestudents.Usingmultimediacanmakestudentstakepartinlearninglanguageactively,canhelpthemmasterteachingmaterialseasily.

6.ProjectRationale

AccordingtoWilliamsandRobertBurden,motivationrefersto“astateoflongitudeandemotionalarousalwhichleadstoaperiodofsustainedintellectualandphysicaleffortinordertoattainapreviouslysetgoal.”Motivationisoneofthemostimportantfactorsinlearningaforeignlanguage.AsDarwinsaid“justaseatingwithoutlikingdoesharmtoone’shealth,learningwithoutlikingharmsmemoryandretainsnothingittakesin.formerexperimentsshowthatamongthefactorscontributingtosuccessoflearners,motivationaccountsforabout35%.

Psychologicalstudiesindicatedthathumanbeingsmainlydependoneyesandearstoobtaininformation.Experimentsindicatethattheinformationreceivedbyearwillremain60%inmemoryafter3hoursandonly40%after3days,whiletheinformationobtainedbothbyearandeyewillremain90%inmemoryafter3hoursandstill75%after3days.Anotherstudyindicatedthatthedevelopmentofhuman’sideationisaprocessfromthinkinginimagestoabstraction.Theteenagersinmiddleschoolhavedevelopedthinkingmoreinimagesthaninabstraction.ApplicationofbriefdrawinginEnglishteachingwillcreatelanguagecircumstancesforstudentsandmobilizetheirenthusiasminthinkinginimages,fortheabstractlanguagematerialstoturnintoconcreteimages.Hencethebriefdrawingsaresuitableforthepsychologicaldevelopmentofteenagers.Itisnotonlyabetterwaytomotivatethestudents,butalsohelpfultomotivatethestudents,butalsohelpfultotheirmemory.

7.ResearchDesign

7.1Subjects

Forthisresearch,Ichosethetwoclassesofmystudentsassubjects.Classoneandclasstwo.ClassoneastheExperimentalGroup,andclasstwoastheControlGroup.TheExperimentalandControlGroupswereselectedrandomly.Duringtheprojectimplementation,theExperimentalGroupwillstudywiththeMultimedia,whiletheControlGroupgoesonstudyingasusual.

7.2Procedure

Thisprojectlasted12weeks(twoandhalfmonths)fromSeptembertoNovember

7.3Principlestofollow

a.Provideaneasyandhappystudyingenvironment,maketheclassroomatmospherelively.

b.Encouragethestudentstospeakbravely.

c.Accordthestudents’interestandpracticabilitywiththecontentsoftheteachingmaterialsandtheageofthestudents.

7.4TechniquesforDatacollection

Duringthisresearchtwotechniqueswereadoptednamelyquestionnaireandtest.Togetherinformationforthedesignoftheresearchandtotestwhethertheresearchiseffective,twoquestionnaireswillbeissued,oneatthebeginningoftheresearchandtheotherattheend.Twotestswillbeincluded(oneasthepretest,theotherastheposttestforcomparison)totesttheco-efficiencybetweenmotivationandschoolrecording.

8.ProjectImplementation

8.1Usemultimediatoteachsentences.

Thestudentsalwaysfeeldullandboriedinclass.Thistime,Igavethemsomepicturesthattheyareinterestedinthem.
