Myresponsibilitiesforthetermincludedgainingmoreunderstandingofonlineeducation.Consequently,Imadeseveralattemptstoenrichmyknowledgeofdistancelearningandonlineteaching.Iconsultedwithmycolleagueswhowereteachingonlinecourses.Thishelpedmerecognizetheimportanceofgettingmaterialspreparedevenbeforethestartofaterm.Ialsolearnedthatonlinecoursesmayconsumemoretimethanregularclassroomteaching.AndIattendedseveralworkshopsregardingonlineeducationandestablishedanetworkwiththosewhowereinvolvedinonlineprogramsatotheruniversities.IwillconsiderthesepeopleasmyconsultantsasIbegintodesignmyownonlinecourse.Also,Iconductedabriefsurveywith15studentsandtwofacultymemberswhohadtakenortaughtanonlinecoursebeforetounderstandtheirexperience.EventuallyIcompletedaliteraturereviewwhichgavemethefoundationandthebackgroundofunderstandingtheneedforonlineeducation.

Mostacademicinstitutionsprovidesomementalhealthservices,oftenthroughacounselingcenter.Butnomatterhowgoodthatcenteris,italonecannotsolvetheproblems.Animportantearlystepisforeachinstitutiontoassesstheextentofthecrisisonitscampusandwhetherthereareenoughtreatmentserviceseitherattheinstitutionorinthelocalcommunity.Anotherimportantquestioniswhetherthereareelementsoftheinstitution’sownenvironmentorculturethatcontributetotheproblemsthatstudentsareexperiencing,likeunreasonableworkloadsordeadlinesforassignments.

Everycollegeanduniversityshouldcarryoutacomprehensiveactionplantoachievethisgoal.Thismayrequireadditionalresourcesduringatryingtimeforinstitutionalbudgets.Butsupportingthewholestudentissoimportantthatfinancialprioritiesshouldberearranged.
