Franklinwasbornin1706inBostontoasoapmakernamedJosiahFranklin.Hisfathercouldnotaffordfullschoolingforallhischildren,butBenjaminlovedbooksandworkedinhiselderbrother'sprintingbusinessbeforestartinganewspapercalledthePennsylvaniaGazettein1729.Hewroteanddrewcartoonsforthenewspaper.Inaddition,heworkedtoimprovelivingconditionsinthecity:

introducingstreetlights,cleaningtheroadsandbuildinglibraries.Inthe1740s,Franklinretiredfromhisnewspaperandturnedtosciencewithgreatsuccess.Hewasaverysmartmanandhisworkonelectricity,includingthe"kiteexperiment"whichconfirmedthenatureoflightning,madehimfamousthroughouttheworld.

Franklinearnedthetitleofthe“FirstAmerican"forhiseffortstounitethe13Americanstates,andtowintheirindependence.ThispartofthestorystartsinLondon.HewassenttothecitytopersuadetheBritishtotreattheAmericanstatesmorefairly.Itwasherethathebeganinteractingwithimportantpoliticalthinkersandactivistsofthetimeanddevelopinghisownpoliticalideas.

FollowinghisreturntoAmericain1761hebecamemuchmoreactiveinAmericanpoliticsandinthebattleagainstBritishrule.
