推荐信（Rl）是美国留学申请必不可少的一个环节，也是很多同学非常头痛的问题。
推荐信到底有多重要？
该如何索取以及撰写推荐信？
本文将从策略的角度对这些问题进行深度解析，谈谈“推销制”，“全周期申请”等关键理念，而并非关注具体细节。
首先，推荐信到底有多重要？
该花多少精力准备推荐信？
先看看笔者从美国高校教授和学生口中获得的信息：
“这个人如果不去美国，将是浪费他的生命。
’我就这样被强推到了princeton数学系phd项目。
”
“西北大学交换时的一封牛推对我的申请起到了关键作用。
”（哥大ieoRphd，gRe仅1200分）
“最重要的指标就是推荐信，其次是标准考试成绩。
最好准备四封推荐信，两封来自本科。
”（纽约大学stern商学院运营管理招生老师）
由此，推荐信的作用可见一般。
何故？
美国的社会的教育体制中推荐制度根深蒂固，推荐者往往用自己的声誉力保被推荐人，这就是所谓的networking。
面对堆积如山的申请材料，各具特色的申请者，专业录取委员会（committee）没有办法在短时间内完全衡量一个人的水平，尤其是不敢只凭一封简历轻易相信大洋彼岸的申请者就是他们要找的人选。
这时，一封有力度的推荐信往往可以起到事半功倍的效果。
这里要介绍一个申请中的“推销制”的概念。
很多人总爱问“到底gpa重要还是gRe重要”，“ps和推荐信到底重不重要”的问题。
答案莫衷一是。
但是我们可以换个角度来考虑。
比如你要卖一瓶矿泉水，那么申请截止日期，就是保质期，营养成分就是gpa，ps就是产品介绍，gRe和toeFl质量机构的鉴定结果。
显而易见，过期的产品肯定卖不出去，营养成分嘛，跟别人差不多就行，质量鉴定嘛，合格就行，而真正重要的首先是里面装的要是矿泉水而不是橙汁，这就是你到底是什么材料，其次就是消费者的朋友对你的评价，这就是从第三方角度写出的推荐信。
由此可见，我们需要将传统的五点制（gpa，gRe，toeFl，ps，Rl）申请观念，转变成为推销制，即在满足基本条件的前提下，最大可能的推销自己。
所以，我无法回答推荐信到底中不重要的问题，一瓶水卖出去就是好水，但是第三方的强力推荐势必事半功倍，但是也有可能你都被录取了，推荐信还没有被committee打开（夸张点）。
那么，到底怎么索取推荐信呢？
这里要宣传一种“全周期”申请理念，所谓强扭的瓜不甜。
你要死要活，托关系死缠烂打乞讨来的推荐信往往没有什么效力。
记住，当你决定申请的那一刻开始，申请就已经开始了，而绝不是等到提交申请材料的那几个月。
笔者想以自己的切身经历来阐述这个问题。
在决定申请后，找哪些人写，从哪些角度写推荐信，心里一定要数，必要时还可以几个候补名单:

比如，笔者借参加竞赛的机会向教授咨询意见，然后是长达半年的沟通和不断汇报自己的
进步，终于获得了参加其研究的机会，于是，一封推荐信水到渠成。
另外，笔者选修某教授的课程，坚持每个officehour时间都去讨论一些问题。
（注意，一点小的经验是这些问题要可持续讨论，比如做点改进后下周再去）结果顺利拿到暑期项目机会，另一封推荐信搞定。
如此，笔者没有开口索要，反而教授们在得知我要申请时都主动提出为我撰写推荐信。
因此，推荐信的索取是一个长期的，动态的过程，要考验一个人的机智、策略和耐心。
推荐信的索取往往是困难的，在无数次想放弃的时候，都需要坚定的信念来支撑。
殊不知，推荐信的价值恰恰在于它的难度，不是每个人都能弄到有价值的推荐信。
如果老师不了解你，或者除了上课以外并无其它关联，一封推荐信上只有某某学习努力，经常提问，在我的课上考的前三名这样的话是没有多大力度的。
俗话说，“攻心为上”，如果老师真的愿意帮你，写出来的推荐信还是不一样的。
索取推荐信后的撰写工作也十分讲究，即便跟老师不太熟悉，在这一步中也要设法补救。
第一：
一封推荐信的推荐力度分三等：
普通推荐，比较推荐，和强烈推荐。
这一点，committee在阅读时都是能够心领神会的。
一封强烈推荐的Rl一定要有充分的实例对观点做支撑，如参与了什么研究，做了哪些工作，展现了什么能力，一定要具体。
比如，强调某人的科研能力时，写出论文或报告的题目，主要技术路线和结论，以及被推荐信做的具体事项，如文献调研，编程，数学建模，实地调研等，并加之自己的主观评价，一定会给人耳目一新的感觉。
第二：
甚至可以维护性的指出被推荐者的缺点。
维护自己不足的方法是承认它而不是一味掩饰它。
比如，某次考试成绩不好或者其它方面有缺陷的，又不得不做解释的，推荐信是一个可以用来说明的地方，因为它出自第三方之口，显得更加公正。
但最后一定要补充说明被推荐人虽然这次做的不好，但是不影响其它方面，并且有足够的潜力获得提高。
以上是我对推荐信的索取和撰写的一点个人心得，希望对大家有所帮助。
申请的工作是一项系统工程，不要过问某项是否有价值，有多少价值，尽心走好每一步就是了，因为你永远不可能提前知道到底什么会提到关键性的作用。
保持一种良好的心态才是制胜的关键。
