摘要
托妮·莫里森的作品《所罗门之歌》是一个悲剧颂歌,赞美非裔美国人。
通过分析小说主人公奶娃的成长过程,从空无目的男孩逐渐成长为一个成熟的男人,并且找到了一种归属感和种族的自豪感。
本文旨在阐述所罗门之歌“飞翔”和“成长”的主题。
"飞翔"是《所罗门之歌》的重要主题之一,很多学者对其做过研究。
多数学者认为该小说中的"飞翔"主题就是美国黑人寻根的象征意义。
文章试图从历史意义的重建与黑人女人的传统来探讨《所罗门之歌》的"飞翔"主题。

Abstract
SongofSolomonbyToniMorrisonisaninitiationstoryandatragicsongglorifyingAfrican-Americans.ByanalyzingMilkman’sinitiationprocessofgrowingfromapurposelessandemptyboyintoamaturemanwithasenseofbelonging,takingprideinhisownrace,thisthesisaimstoillustratethethemesofSongofSolomon.Thethemeofflyingandgrowingup.“Flying”isoneoftheimportantthemesoftheSongofSolomon.Manyscholarshavedidstudiesonit.Mostscholarsbelievethatthe"flying"themeofthenovelisthesymbolofblackAmerican’sroots.Thisarticleattemptstoexplorethe“Flying”themeofSongofSolomonfromthereconstructionofthehistoricalsignificanceandblackwomen’stradition.ThroughtheanalysisoftherelationshipbetweenMilkman’sgrowingupwiththe"flying"themeandunderstandingtraditional,thispaperstatesthatonlybyreturningtothenaturecanblackpeopleunderstandtheirowncultureandrootsandsurviveintheintenseculturalconflict.

I.Introduction
ToniMorrisonisthefirstblackwomanwriterinAmericanliteraturewhohaswontheNobelPrize.Herworkshaveattractedgreatattentionfromliterarycriticsathomeandabroadforalongtime.Inherlife,shehasproducedeightfamousworks,includingTheBluestEye,Sula,SongofSolomon,Belovedandsoon,thusreceivingtheNationalBookCriticsAward,PulitzerPrizeandotherprizes(Carmean,1993).
SongofSolomon,ToniMorrison’sthirdnovel,istheonlyoneregardingamaleasprotagonistamonghereightworks.ThisnovelhaswonhighlyevaluationfromcriticsandisconsideredthebestblackAmericanworkafterthepublicationofInvisibleManbyRalphEllison.Itisatypicalinitiationstoryofblackpeople.Theprotagonist,Milkman’smaturityandawakeningofmaleconsciousnessmakeupthethemeofthisnovel.ThereisnoaiminMilkman’slife.Hedoesnotknowhisownname,norcomprehendstheculturaltradition.Beingselfish,heneverthinksoverothers’ideas.Withtheguidanceofhisauntandfriend,hebecomesaninheritorofAfricanAmericanculture,finallyfindingtherootofhisnationandgoingmaturegradually.
ThispaperaimstohaveabriefstudyonthetwomainthemesofSongofSolomon,thethemesofflyingandgrowingup.Thispaperincludesfourparts.Partoneistheintroductionofthepaper.ParttwoisthebackgroundinformationthatintroducesthewriterToniMorrisonandthenovelSongofSolomon.Partthreeisthemainbodyofthepaper.ItanalyzesthethemeofFlyingfromtwoaspectsandMilkman’sgrowingupwithunderstandingflyingandtraditio2.Partfouristheconclusion.
2.BackgroundInformation
ThispartconductsabriefintroductiononthewriterToniMorrisonandthenovelSongofSolomon.ToniMorrisonwasthewriterofSongofSolomn.ThefirstpartintroducesTiniMorrison’slifeexperiencesandhermajorworks.ThesecondpartintroducesthemaincontentofSongofSolomon.
2.1ToniMorrison
ToniMorrisonwasborninChloeAnthonyWoffordin1931andspentthefirstyearsofherlifeinOhio.ShereceivedanundergraduatedegreeinEnglishfromHowardUniversityandcompletedamaster’sprogramatCornell.Whenmanyofherclassmateshaddifficultypronouncingheruncommonfirstname,shechangedittoToni(aderivativeofhermiddlename).In1958,shemarriedHaroldMorrison,anarchitectfromJamaica,andthecouplehadtwosons.Theydivorcedsixyearslater.AfterpursuinganacademiccareerteachingEnglishatHoward,MorrisonbecameaneditoratRandomHouse,whereshespecializedinBlackfiction.
Atthesametime,shebeganproducingacreativeworkthatwouldmakeherthefirstAfrican-AmericanwomantoreceivetheNobelPrizeforLiteraturein1993.Morrison’sfirstnovel,TheBluestEye,wasnotanimmediatesuccess,butshecontinuedtowrite.Sula,whichappearedin1973,wasmoresuccessful,earninganominationfortheNationalBookAward.In1977,SongofSolomonlaunchedMorrison’snationalreputation,winninghertheNationalBookCritics’CircleAward.Hermostwell-knownwork,Beloved,appearedin1987andwonthePulitzerPrize.HerothernovelsincludeTarBaby(1981),Jazz(1992),andParadise(1998).Meanwhile,MorrisonreturnedtoteachingandwasaprofessoratYaleandtheStateUniversityofNewYorkatAlbany.Today,sheistheRobertF.GoheenProfessorintheCouncilofHumanitiesatPrincetonUniversity,wheresheteachescreativewriting.
MorrisononcesaidthatshewantedtohelpcreateacanonofBlackwork,notingthatBlackwriterstoooftenhavetopandertoawhiteaudiencewhentheyshouldbeabletoconcentrateonthebusinessofwritinginstead.ManyreadersbelieveMorrison’snovelsgoalongwaytowardtheestablishmentofherenvisionedtradition.Thepoetic,elegantstyleofherwritinginBelovedpanderstonoone.Morrisonchallengesandrequiresthereadertoacceptheronherownterms.

SongofSolomon isalsoMorrison'sfirstnoveltobewrittenthroughamaleprotagonistview,andthenarrator'sextraordinarymannerofweavinginandoutcreatesanevenmorespellboundlureintothenovel'splot.Thistechniquefollowsinpartfromtheauthor'sinterestinfolkstorytellingtraditions;MorrisonpatternsthenovelafteraYorubafolktaleaboutAfrican-bornslaveswhocouldflybacktoAfricawhenevertheywanted.Morrisonalludestootherancientstorytellingandfolkarttraditionsaswell.ThetitleitselfcomesfromtheSongofSongs(orSongofSolomon)intheOldTestament,arhapsodiclovepoemconsistingofaddressesbetweenaloverandabeloved.ThelyricsoftheSongofSolomonaspresentedinthenovelareavariantofaGullahfolktale,furtheremphasizingtheimportanceoforaltradition.Interestingly,MorrisonmayhavetakenthisinterestinrootsandhistoryevenfurtherwiththenameofSolomon,asthatwasthenameofherowngrandfather,aformerslave.
