ThePreparation

Inthespringof2004weplantoparticipateinourfirstEmbryoTransfer（ET）program.OurplanistouseKattieasourdonordoe;shehasanoutstandingbloodlineandhasproducedsometrulytremendouskids,toincludeEnhancerI,Panna,Samantha,andThunderbolt.WearestillconsideringusingVenusasadonor;butsinceher‘BlackFriday’,wewillcontinuetomonitorherandmakethefinaldecisioninlateFebruary2004

Step1ofourplanningistohaveanadequatenumberofhappy,healthyrecipientdoes.

Manyoftherecipientdoeswillcomefromourexistingherd.Allthedoeswhokiddedinthefallof2003.exceptVenus,willbeusedbecauseweknowtheircapabilities,theirhealthhistory,andtheirmotheringabilities.Allkidsfromthefall2003crophavegainedmorethan½poundadaywithnosupplementsotherthanthemothersarebeingfedtwiceadayinsteadofonceaday

But,weneedaminimumof10to12recipientdoes;so,weattendedthemonthlyauctionatElginCrossroadson12Dec03withtheintentionofbuyingsomerecipientsifthepricewasright.

Thepriceswereextremelylow.Wedecidedtobuydoeswithkidsbytheirside.Thatwaywewouldbeabletodeterminetheirmilkcapacityanddeterminetheirmotheringskills.

Note:

anytimeyoupurchasefromasalesbarn,youneverknowwhatyouaregoingtobebringinghome–inthewayofqualityordisease.Itis,therefore,extremelyimportanttohavean“isolationarea”wherethegoatscanbekeptandmonitoredbeforejoiningtherestofyourherd.AllourpurchasesfromsalebarnsaretestedforCL,CAE,andJohnesasaprecaution.Ourintentisnottoallowthesereceiptstojointheherdatall.

Assoonaswebroughtthegoatshome,wewormedthemthreedaysinarowwithValbazen.Oneweekafterthefinalwormingwiththewhitewormer,wewormedwithanIvomectinproduct.Oneofthethreegoatsweboughthadaverymildcaseofdiarrhea,sowechoseanaggressivelytreatmentofBiosolandKaopectin.

Wealsowenttoourvet’sandpickedupthreesyringesof3cclutylasejustincasethesedoeswerepregnant（althoughwewerecertain,basedontheageofthekidsonthem,theywouldnotbebredback）.

Attheauction,theysoldthemalekidsoffoneofthedoes.Basedonthesizeofthekids,weguessedtheywere2monthsold.Twodaysafterwegavethisdoeherlutylaseshot,sheaborted3fetuses–twogirlsandaboy–whowerewell-formedandclearlyinthelasttrimesterofthepregnancy.Theclearindicationisthekidsbyhersideattheauctionwerenothers.Theothertwodoeshadnonoticeablereactiontothelutylase.

OneofthethreedoeswepurchasedasarecipientisafullbloodBoerwithaweek-olddoekid.She’slongandextremelythinbut,withthepropernutrition,shouldbeeasilycapableofcarryingtwoembryos.TheothertwodoesareKikos–one（theonewhoabortedthe3fetuses）appearstobeapproximately4yearsoldandisextremelymalnourished;again,properfeedingandanoccasionalfortifiedVitaminBcomplexshotshouldimprovehercondition.BoththeKikoshavealargecapacityandcaneasilycarrytwo（ormore）embryos.

Withtheactualflushdatesetandonthehorizon,wespentseveraldaysmakingourfinalpreparations…gettingthedoesready.

InJanuarywemadethedecisiontodefinitelyuseKattieasourdonordoeinsteadofVenus.Venusmaybeusedinournextflushifthisoneissuccessful.WeremovedKattie'smalekidinmid-JanuarybutleftSamanthaforKattietowean.Inretrospectthismayhavebeenamistake;weprobablyshouldhaveweanedSamanthawhenweremovedThunderbolt.

OnJanuary24thwepickedupthelasttwodoesweneedforreceips.DamonDeese,themanageroftheLawrenceCountyCo-Op,isloaningustwoofhisdoes.Inreturnwewillallowhimtobreedhisremainingdoestooneofourbucksandreturnthetwodoesbred.Sincehedoesnothaveabuck,wedeterminedwewouldgivehimabuckkidfromtheETbreeding.Damon,inloaningusthedoes,isjustbeingagoodneighbor.

ArrangementswereconfirmedwithJeffLathamoftheLazyLFarminLivingston,AL.WeweretoldCIDRsweretogoinonMarch1st;thebreeddatewouldbeMarch18th;andtheflushwouldtakeplaceonMarch25th.SincethebreeddateconflictedwiththegoatshowinMontgomery,AL,wecancelledourplanstoattendtheshow.

Jeffrecommendedwestarttoincreasetheamountoffeedforthedonorandreceipsamonthtosixweeksbeforetheflush.Beforewecouldincreasethefeed,wefeltweneededtoweanthebabiesofKattie,ourdonor,andsevenoftheelevenreceipssothesedoescoulddryup.Samanthawasalmost4monthsold;timetoweanherregardlessofhowmuchKattieprotested.Dot,Matilda,Xenia,Koko,andLouisehadallkiddedinNovember,sotheirkidswereatleast10weeksoldwhenweweanedthem.Faith'sdaughter,Gidget,wasonly8weeksoldaswasKoko'slittleboy;butbothkidswereeatingwell.Sothekidswentinonepaddockandthemothersinanother,andwehadalotofextremelyunhappygoatsforabouttwoweeks.（Themothersmoreunhappythanthebabiesbecausenotonlyweretheyuncomfortablewithfulludders,theyalsowereconfidentwewerestarvingthembyfeedingonlyhayandwater!

WegotacallfromJeffearlythemorningofFebruary24th.TheflushdatehadmoveduptoMarch20th,sothebreeddatewasadvancedtoMarch13thandCIDRshadtogoinonFebruary26th.Mildpanic!

SevenofthereceipsandKattiewerenotfullydriedoff,andwehadtoimmediatelystartincreasingtheirfeedto4poundsaday.KencalledDr.Galbraith's,andhehadmedicationtodryupthedoes–1ccofForsomidefor3days.The8gottheirfirstshotsonthe24th.

OnFebruary25th,the8doesgottheirsecondshottodryoff;andall12doesweregiven2ccvitaminAD&Eplus2ccBoSe.All12werealsogivenweight-appropriatedosesofIvomecPlus,andtheyallgotpedicures.

Alsoonthe25th,Jeffshippedus14CIDRsandFolltropin®–Valongwithwritteninstructionsforustofollow.

OntheafternoonofFebruary26th,UPSdeliveredoursupplies.The"tails"ofalltheCIDRswerepaintedwithbrightredfingernailpolish,andtheball-liketipswerecutoff.（ThetipswerecutofftopreventotherdoesfrompullingouttheCIDRs.Thewhitestringswerepaintedredsowecouldseethemandinsuretheyremainwheretheybelong.）

Thattaskaccomplished,offtothebarntoinsertCIDRs.

CIDRsareintravaginalprogesteronereleasedevicesforcontrolledbreedingofgoatsandsheep.EachCIDRcontains.3gramsofprogesterone.Besidesbeingusedinembryotransferprograms,theyarefrequentlyusedin“outofseason”breedingofsomebreedsbecausetheycontroltheoestrouscycle.Whenusedwithgoatstheinstructionssaytoinsertthedevicefor17to19days.

Thereare7stepsintheinsertiondirections.Besuretowearrubbergloves.

1.Washtheapplicatorinanantisepticsolution.Dipthefrontoftheapplicatorintoanobstetricallubricant.

2.PlacetheCIDRintotheapplicatorsothewingsarefoldedandonlythetipsofthewingsprotrudefromthetopoftheapplicator.

3.PutsomeoftheKY-Jellyontheendoftheapplicator.

4.Liftthetailoftheanimalandwipecleanthelipsofthevulvawithadisposabletissue.

5.Withtheanimal’staillifted,inserttheloadedapplicator,slopingitslightlyupwards,throughthevulvaandintotheforwardportionofthevagina.

6.Graspthefingerholdsoftheapplicatorandfirmlypullthebarreloftheapplicatortowardthehandletoremove.

7.Ifthedeviceiscorrectlyinplace,thewingswillopenintheanteriorofthevaginaandthetailoftheCIDRisvisiblyprotrudingfromthevulva.

TheCIDRsweusedwereEAZI-BREED™byPharmacia&UpjohnoutofMt.Wellington,Auckland.

TheCIDRsactuallywentinaloteasierthanwewereanticipating.Bythelastonewehaditdowntoashortroutine.The8doesalsogottheirfinalshottodryoff.

Withthegoats,donorandreceips,onceagainbeingfedfullrations（2poundsoffeedeach–twiceaday）andthepreliminarypreparationscompleted,we'rereadyforthenextstep.

Onthe12thdayaftertheCIDRswereinserted,itwastimetostartthehormoneshotsforKattie,ourdonordoe.ThefirsttwoshotsofFolltropin®-Vweretobeintheneck.Sincewehadnevergivenshotsinthisareaandsincewewantedthisdrugtobecorrectlyadministrated,KentookKattietothevet's.（AndsincealldoesneededhealthcertificatespriortotraveltoAlabama,thiswasaccomplishedatthesametime.）

Inaddition,Corinahadbeen"off"sincethethirddayaftertheCIDRswereinserted.Shewasnoteating;shehadanormaltemperature;butshewaswalkingaroundwithherheaddownorjustlayingaroundthebarnwithherheadagainstthewall.Fecalswerecheckedforparasites,andbloodtestsconducted.Ourvetcouldfindnothingwrongwithher,andthreedayslater,whentheresultsofthebloodtestswerereceived,hernamewasaddedtothehealthcertificate.

Falltropin-VBottles

Thefirstshot,intheafternoon,was1.5ccofFolltropin®-V,amedicinethatcameintwobottlesthathadtobemixed.（Onebottlewasthedrugitself;thesecondbottlewasasterileDiluent.）ThenextmorningKattiegot1.5cc.Thatafternoonshegotanother1.25cc.Onday14shegot1.25ccinthemorningandanadditional1ccintheafternoon.Thefollowingdayshegot1ccinthemorningand.75ccintheafternoon.Finally,themorningfollowingtheremovalofherCIDRshereceivedherlastshotaFolltropin®-V,.5cc.Thislastshotwasonbreedingday.
