IamgladtosaythatIhaveentirelylostthatfaculty.PeopletellusthatArtmakesusloveNaturemorethanwelovedherbefore;thatitrevealshersecretstous;andthatafteracarefulstudyofCorotandConstableweseethingsinherthathadescapedourobservation.MyownexperienceisthatthemorewestudyArt,thelesswecareforMature.WhatArtreallyrevealstousisNature's
lackofdesign,hercuriouscrudities,herextraordinarymonotony,herabsolutelyunfinishedcondition.Naturehasgoodintentions,ofcourse,but,asAristotleoncesaid,shecannotcarrythemout.WhenIlookatalandscapeIcannothelpseeingallitsdefects.Itisfortunateforus,however,thatNatureissoimperfect,asotherwiseweshouldhavehadno
artatall.Artisourspiritedprotest,ourgallantattempttoteachNatureherproperplace.AsfortheinfinitevarietyofNature,thatisapuremyth.ItisnottobefoundinNatureherself.Itresidesintheimagination,orfancy,orcultivatedblindnessofthemanwholooksather.
