In1874Monetandhiscolleaguesdecidedtoorganizetheirownexhibition.Theycalledthemselvesindependents,butthepresssoonlabeledthemimpressionistsbecauseoneofMonet’spaintingshadbornethetitleImpression:

Bythemid-1880s,Monet,generallyregardedastheleaderoftheimpressionistschool,hadachievedsignificantrecognitionandfinancialsecurity.In1890hewasabletopurchasesomepropertyinthevillageofGiverny,notfarfromParis,andtherebebegantoconstructawatergarden—awaterlily(百合花)pondwithaJapanesebridge.Beginningin1906,paintingsofthepondandthewaterliliesoccupiedhismindfortherestofhislife.HisfamousseriesWaterLilies,paintedbetween1990and1926,Clearlyshowstheartist’sstronginterestincolorandproducesaremarkable(不寻常的)visualeffect.Despitefailingeyesight,Monetcontinuedtopaintalmostuptothetimeofhisdeath,onDecember5,1926,atGiverny.
