Straussworkedinhisbrother'sdrygoodsbusiness.Thisgavehimachancetoproducehisfamous

invention.Afterthegoldrushof1949,StraussdecidedtomovetotheWesttoseekhisfortunes.

Straussdidnotwanttobeapersonwhosearchedanareaforminerals.Instead,heknewhecouldmakeagoodlivingbysellingsuppliestotheminers.Atfirst,heplannedtosellsewing

suppliesandcloth.3Whenheheardminerscomplainingthattheirclotheswereeasilybroken

ortheyusuallytoretheirpocketsduringmining,hedecidedtouseaspecialfabrictomakepants

fortheminers.Thesepantsprovedsopopularthathequicklyranoutofmaterialstomakemore.

In1873,StraussreceivedaletterfromaJewishtailornamedJacobDaviswhohadinventeda

processofconnectingpocketswithcopperrivets(铆钉).Thismadethepantslastalong

time.BecauseDavisdidnothavethemoneytopatenthisidea,heofferedtoshareitwithStrauss

ifStrausswouldagreetopayforthepatent.4.

BythetimeStraussdiedin1902,hehadmadeagreatcontributiontoAmericanfashion.

largestclothingcompaniesintheworld.
