Tobefrank,Idonotlikereadingverymuch.Bychance,oneofmyforeignteacherintroducedthisbooktome,hesaidthisbookiswrittenforchildren,soitwasattractiveandeasttounderstand.IwassuspicioussoItookaquicklookofit.Surprisingly,Iwasaddictedintothisbook.Justaswhatmyteachertoldme,itisabookforchildren,butnotonlyforchildren.

Thisbookfirstpublishedin1975,theauthorwasRoaldDahl,afamousstoryteller.HewasaBritishnovelist,shortstorywriter,fighterpilotandscreenwriter.HewasborninWalestoNorwegianparents,heservedintheRoyalAirForceduringtheSecondWorldWar,inwhichhebecameaflyingaceandintelligenceagent,risingtotherankofWingCommander.Dahlrosetoprominenceinthe1940swithworksforbothchildrenandadults,andbecameoneoftheworld'sbest-sellingauthors.Hehasbeenreferredtoas"oneofthegreateststorytellersforchildrenofthe20thcentury".

In2008TheTimesplacedDahl16thonitslistof"The50greatestBritishwriterssince1945".Hisshortstoriesareknownfortheirunexpectedendings,andhischildren'sbooksfortheirunsentimental,oftenverydarkhumour.

AmajorpartofDahl'sliteraryinfluencesstemmedfromhischildhood.Inhisyoungerdays,hewasanavidreader,especiallyawedbyfantastictalesofheroismandtriumph.AmongsthisfavouriteauthorswereRudyardKipling,WilliamMakepeaceThackeray,FrederickMarryatandCharlesDickens,andtheirworkswentontomakealastingmarkonhislifeandwriting.DahlwasalsoahugefanofghoststoriesandclaimedthatTrollsbyJonasLiewasoneofthefinestghoststorieseverwritten.Whilehewasstillayoungster,hismother,SofieDahl,wouldrelatetraditionalNorwegianmythsandlegendsfromhernativehomelandtoDahlandhissisters.Dahlalwaysmaintainedthathismotherandherstorieshadastronginfluenceonhiswriting.Inoneinterview,hementioned:

"Shewasagreattelleroftales.Hermemorywasprodigiousandnothingthateverhappenedtoherinherlifewasforgotten."WhenDahlstartedwritingandpublishinghisfamousbooksforchildren,hecreatedagrandmothercharacterinTheWitchesandlaterstatedthatshewasbaseddirectlyonhisownmotherasatribute.

Referstothecontentofthisbook,theplotmaincentersonayoungEnglishboy,Danny,andhisfather,William,wholiveinaGypsyvardofixingcarsforalivingandpartakeinpoachingpheasants.ThestoryisbasedonDahl'sadultshortstory"ChampionoftheWorld"whichappearsinClaud'sDog.

DannywasonlyfourmonthsoldwhenhismotherdiedandlivedwithhiswidowedfatherWilliaminaGypsycaravan,whereWilliamoperatesafillingstationandgarage,whichaloneofthesurroundinglandisnotownedbytheunpleasantlocallandlord,Mr.VictorHazell.WhenMr.HazellthreatensDannywithoutcause,Williamrefusestoservehim;whereafterseveralinspectorsvisitthestation,presumablyatMr.Hazell'sdirection.WhenDannyisonlynineyearsold,hediscoversthatWilliamhashabituallytakenpartinpoachingpheasantsfromMr.Hazell'sestate.Williamrevealsmethodsofpoaching,byplacingaraisininsidea"StickyHat",sothatthepheasantcannotflee,andbyhavingahorse'stailhair,threadedthrougharaisin,causetheraisintobecomelodgedinthepheasant'sthroat.Thisinturncausesthepheasanttobecomepreoccupiedwithtryingtoswallowtheraisin,sothatapoachercaneasilycatchit.Ononeoccasion,Danny,wakingupataround2:

10a.m.,discoversWilliam'sabsence,andfearingthatsomemisfortunehasbefallenhim,drivesanAustinSevenmotorcartoHazell'sWood,whereDannyeventuallyfoundWilliaminapit-trap,disabledbyabrokenankle,andbringshimhome.WilliamistreatedbyDocSpencer,whoisafriendoftheirsandanotherpoacheronMr.Hazell'sestate.

WhileWilliamisrecoveringfromhisinjury,heandDannyfoundoutthatMr.Hazell'sannualpheasant-shootingpartyisapproaching,whichhehoststocurryfavorandprestigeamongthegentry,anddecidetohumiliatehimbyluringallthepheasantsawayfromtheforest,sotherewillbenopheasantstoshoot.DannysuggeststhatheandWilliamshouldputthecontentsofsleepingtabletsprescribedbyDocSpencerinsideraisinswhichthepheasantswilltheneat;andWilliamdubsthisnewmethodthe"SleepingBeauty".Havingpoached120pheasantsfromHazell'sWood,WilliamandDannyhidethedruggedpheasantsatthelocalvicar'shouse,whiletheytookataxicabhome.Thenextday,thevicar'swifedeliversthesleepingpheasantsinaspecially-builtoversizedbabycarriage.Assheiswalkingtowardthem,thepheasantsattempttoescape,buttheyfallback.WiththehelpofSgt.Samways,thelocalconstable,WilliamandDannyherdthegroggybirdsontoMr.Hazell's

RollsRoyce,wherethebirdsscratchthepaintworkanddefecateonhiscar.Whenthepheasantshavewokencompletely,theydepart,andMr.Hazelldrivesoffindisgrace,hisfancycarandshootingpartyruined.ThebookendswhenDannyishailedas"thechampionoftheworld"byWilliam,DocSpencer,andSgt.Samways,ofwhommostacquireseveralpheasantswhohaddiedoftakingtoomanysleeping-pills.WilliamandDannywalkofftowardstown,intendingtobuyanewovenforcookingtheirpheasants.Astheygo,DannydwellsinhisnarrationonWilliam'simaginationandvivacity.
