GreatExpectationsisaboutlove,family,andrejectionasPipandMissHavishamhavebothbeenrejectedincertainways.Pipisaboyaround13yearsold,easytofright,andgoesthroughhislifesufferinglotsofsadness.HeisinlovewithagirlnamedEstellaandwantshertofindhislove,butforhimbeingshyandnotshowinghimselftoher,itmakesitveryhardforhim.
GreatExpectationswasthepenultimatenovelcompletedbythemostpopularnovelistofVictorianEngland,CharlesDickens.BorninKent,England,in1812toafamilyofmodestmeansbutgreatpretensions,Dickens’searlylifewasmarkedbybothhumiliationandambition.Dickensneverforgottheperiodoffinancialcrisisduringhischildhood,whenfollowinghisfather’sbankruptcy,hewastakenoutofschoolandforcedtoworkinashoepolishwarehouse.

DickenshasPipasthewriterandfirstpersonnarratorofthisaccountofhislife’sexperiences,andtheentirestoryisunderstoodtohavebeenwrittenasaretrospective,ratherthanasapresenttensenarrativeoradiaryorjournal.Still,thoughPip“knows”howalltheeventsinthestorywillturnout,heusesonlyverysubtleforeshadowingsothatwelearnofeventsonlywhenthePipinthestorydoes.Pipdoes,however,usetheperspectiveofthebitterlessonshe’slearnedtocommentacidlyonvariousactionsandattitudesinhisearlierlife.
