MarkRothko,oneofthegreatestpaintersofthetwentiethcentury,wasborninDaugavpils,Latviain1903.HisfatherimmigratedtotheUnitedStates,fearingthathissonwouldbedrafted（招募）intotheCzaristarmy.MarkstayedinRussiawithhismotherandeldersister;theyjoinedthefamilylater,arrivinginthewinterof1913,aftera12-dayvoyage.

MarkmovedtoNewYorkintheautumnof1923andfoundemploymentinthegarmenttradeandtookupresidenceontheUpperWestSide.ItwaswhilehewasvisitingsomeoneattheArtStudentsLeaguethathesawstudentssketchinganudemodel.Accordingtohim,thiswasthestartofhislifeasanartist.Hewastwentyyearsoldandhadtakensomeartlessonsatschool,sohisinitialexperiencewasfarfromanimmediatecalling.

In1936,MarkRothkobeganwritingabook,whichhenevercompletedaboutthesimilaritiesinthechildren’sartandtheworkofmodernpainters.Theworkofmodernists,whichwasinfluencedbyprimitive（原始的）art,accordingtohim,couldbecomparedtothatofchildreninthat“Childarttransformsitselfintoprimitivism（原始主义）,whichisonlythechildproducingamimicry（模仿）ofhimself.”However,inthissamework,hesaidthat“Thefactthatoneusuallybeginswithdrawingisalreadyacademic.Westartwiththecolors.”
