AnyYinorYangaspectcanbefurtherdividedintoYinandYang
Thismeansthatwithineachyinandyangcategory,anotheryinandyangcategorycanbedistinguished.Itisanextensionofthelogicthatdividesallphenomenaintoyinandyangaspects,allowingfurtherdivisionwithinaspectsadinfinitum.Forexample,temperaturecanbedividedintocold(yin)andhot(yang),butcoldcanbedividedfurtherintoicycold(yin)andmoderatelycold(yang).Inthebody,thefrontofthetrunkisyincomparedwiththeback,butthefrontcanbedividedfurthersothattheabdomenisyininrelationtothechest.Withinayinillnesscharacterizedbycoldnesstheremaybeaspectsofyangsuchassharp,forcefulcontractions.Withinayangillnesshearandhyperactivitytheremaybeweaknessandlossofweight,bothyinqualities.
ChuangTzu,theTaoistphilosopher(fl.probablybetween400and300B.C.E.),describestheunfoldingofyinandyang,andthenotionoftheunityofopposites,inaradicalparadoxicalway:
”thereisnothingintheworldgreaterthanthetipofahairthatgrowsintheautumn,whileMountTaiissmall.Noonelivesalongerlifethanachildwhodiesininfancy,butpengzudieseprematurely.11
Yinandyangmutuallycreateeachother.
Althoughyinandyangcanbedistinguished,theycannotbeseparated.Theydependoneachotherfordefinition.Andthethingsinwhichyinandyangaredistinguishedcouldnotbedefinedwithouttheexistenceofyinandyangqualities.Forinstance,onecannotspeakoftemperatureapartfromitsyinandyangaspects,coldandheat.Similarly,onecouldnotspeakofheightunlesstherewerebothtallnessandshortness.Suchoppositeaspectsdependonanddefineeachother.
Anotherexamplemightbetherelationshipbetweenacoupleinwhichonepartnercanbe(relatively)passiveonlyiftheotherpartneris(relatively)aggressive,andviceversa.Passivityandaggressioncanbemeasuredonlyincomparisonwitheachother.Theactivity(yang)ofthebodyisnourishedbyitsphysicalform(Yin),andthephysicalformiscreatedandmaintainedbytheactivityofthebody.Inillness,overactivityhasmeaningonlyinrelationtoaconditionofunderactivity,andviceversa.
Yinandyangcontroleachother

YinandYangtransformintoeachother.
Thisprincipleisaformulaforthenatureoforganicprocess.Itsuggeststwotypesoftransformations:
changesthatoccurharmoniously,inthenormalcourseofevents,andthesuddenrupturesandtransformationscharacteristicofextremelydisharmonioussituations.
BecauseYinandYangcreateeachotherineventhemoststablerelationships,yinandyangarealwayssubtlysupporting,repairing,andtransformingintoeachother.Thisconstanttransformationisthesourceofallchange.Itisagive-and-takerelationshipthatislifeactivityitself.Inthedynamicsofthebody,thenatureoftransformationcanbeillustratedbythemannerinwhichinhalationisfollowedbyexhalation,orperiodsofactivityandexertionmustbesucceededbynourishmentandrest.Inhumaninteractions,assertionandresponsivenessalternate.Innormallifesuchregulartransformationsoccursmoothly,maintainingaproper,healthybalanceofYinandYang.
InarelationshipinwhichYinandYangareunbalancedforprolongedperiodsoftimeorinanextrememanner,theresultingtransformationsmaybequitedrastic.HarmonymeansthattheproportionsofYinandyangarerelativelybalanced;disharmonymeansthattheproportionsareunequalandthereisimbalance.Adeficiencyofoneaspectimpliesanexcessoftheother.Extremedisharmonymeansthatthedeficiencyofoneaspectcannotcontinuetosupporttheexcessofanotheraspect.Theresultingchangemayberebalancingor,ifthatisnotpossible,eitherthetransformationintooppositesorthecessationofexistence.
Toreturntothecouple,let’sassumeadisharmoniousrelationshipinwhichonepartnerisexcessivelyaggressiveandtheotherexcessivelypassive.Thissituationcanhavethreepossibleoutcomes.Theysitdownandtalkitout,agreeingtoarearrangementofattitudes(i.e.,theyrebalancetheirrelationship);oronedaythepassivepartnergetsfedupandwaitsfortheotherwithanax(i.e.,aradicaltransformationofYinintoYangoccurs);ortheyseparate,puttinganendtotherelationship.
Inclinicalpractice,oneofthesethreekindsoftransformationisalwayspossible.Forexample,whenapatienthasapatternwithveryhighfeverandmuchsweating(consideredanexcessofYangorfire),thepatientmaybeindangerofsuddenlygoingintoshock(anextremeYin,orCold,condition).ThisisbecauseYangcannotcontinuetoexistinsuchextremerelationtoYinwithoutsometransformationoccurring.Eitheragradualtransformation,arebalancing,musttakeplace—medicationandhealing;oraradicaltransformationwilloccur—shock;orYingandYangwillseparateandexistencewillcease—death.
LaoTzudescribesthetransformationprocesspoetically:
Inordertocontract,

Inordertodestroy,
