Everyoneisauniqueperson.Eventhoughpeoplehavethingsincommonwitheachothertheyarealsodifferentinallsortsofways.Differencesincludevisibleandnon-visiblefactors,forexample,personalcharacteristicssuchasbackground,culture,personality,andwork-style,size,accent,languageandsoon.Anumberofpersonalcharacteristicsarecoveredbydiscriminationlawtogivepeopleprotectionagainstbeingtreatedunfairly.The‘protectedcharacteristics’arerace,disability,genderreassignment,sex,marriageandcivilpartnership,pregnancyandmaternity,religionandbelief,sexualorientationandage.

CIPDdefinesmanagingdiversityasvaluingeveryoneasanindividual–valuingpeopleasemployees,customersandclients.
