TheGreatPacificGarbagePatch(GPGP)spans617,763sqmiles-morethantwicethesizeofFrance,andcontainsatleast79,000tonsofplastic,researchfoundlastmonth.Mostofitismadeupof“ghostgear”–partsofabandonedandlostfishinggear,suchasnetsandropes–oftenfromillegalfishingvessels.
