AsayoungmanBonestellstudiedarchitecture—theartandscienceofdesigningandmakingbuildings.In1938BonestellbecameaspecialeffectsartistinHollywood.Itwasherethathelearnedhecouldimprovehispaintingsbyfollowingthemethodsusedinthemovies.

In1944,apopularmagazinepublishedaseriesofBonestell’spaintingsoftheplanetSaturn.HedrewSaturnasifitwereseenbysomeonestandingoneach

oftheplanet’smoons.Theresultsweredazzling(耀眼的).Withinafewyears,Bonestell’sartworkappearedregularlyinmagazinesandbooksonastronomyandspaceflight.

ManyofBonestell’sartworkshadbeenrightallalong.ButthebiggestsurprisewastheMoon.SomeoneaskedBonestellwhathewasthinkingwhenhesawthefirstpicturesfromtheMoon.“IthoughthowwrongIwas!
