User’sGuide
INTRODUCTION
TheEnvironmentalDataConnector(EDC)isatoolthatallowsuserstoconnecttoTHREDDS/OPeNDAPserversfromwithinArcGISanddownloadenvironmentaldata.ItwasdevelopedfortheNationalOceanicandAtmosphericAdministration(NOAA)FisheriesbyAppliedScienceAssociates,Inc.(ASA).TheEDCisavailableintwoversions:
theoriginalEDCwhichisdesignedtoworkinconjunctionwithArcGIS,andtheEDCStandaloneversionwhichcanberunoutsideArcGIS.

FortheArcGISversionoftheEDC,clickthe‘DownloadEDC’link.FortheStandaloneversionoftheEDC,clickthe‘DownloadEDCStandalone’link.
AlthoughregistrationisnotnecessarytodownloadtheEDC,weencourageyoutoregisteronthiswebsiteifyouwouldliketobeinformedwhenupdatesaremadeavailable.Installationinstructionsandthisuserguidearealsoavailableatthiswebsite.
GETTINGSTARTED
Aninstallationmanualisalsoavailablefordownloadfromthewebsite,InstalltheEDCaccordingtothoseinstructions.
TostarttheEDC,eitherclickontheEDCiconinArcMaporclickthe‘EDC’menuandchoose‘EnvironmentalDataConnector’.TheEDCwillopeninanewwindow.WhiletheEDCisopen,ArcGISislockedandinaccessible.
CONNECTINGTODATA
InthetopportionoftheEDC,youmayselectthedatasource.ValiddatasourcesareeitherTHREDDSdatacatalogsorindividualdatasets.Thedropdownmenuslistsomecommonsourcesforoceanographicandatmosphericdata.YoumayselectoneofthecatalogsordatasetsinthedropdownmenusormanuallytypeinadifferentURL.The‘CatalogURL’connectstoTHREDDSdatasetcatalogs,whilethe‘DirectAccessURL’connectstoindividualdatasets.
Onceyouhaveselectedacatalog(ordataset),clickthe‘Connect’buttontoconnecttothatdataset.Ifyouconnecttoadatacatalog,adirectorytreewillappearinthelefthandsideoftheEDCshowingthedirectorystructureofthedatacatalog.Selectthedatasetyouwouldliketodownloadbynavigatingthroughthisdirectorystructure.
Onceyouhavenavigatedtoasingledataset,youwillseethatdataset’smetadatainthemainscreentotherightofthedirectorytree.Theamountofmetadatawillvarydependingonthedatasetandthedatasource.
VIEWINGANDSUBSETTINGDATA
Onceyouhavenavigatedtoyourdatasetofinterestandreviewedthemetadata,clickthe“Subset&Process’buttontoconnecttothedataset.OncetheEDCconnectstothedataset,anewtabwindowopensintheEDC.Thistabhasa‘Subset&Process’title.The‘Browse’tabisstillvisible,andyoumayclickonthistabtodisplaythecatalogtreeandconnecttootherdatasets.
Inthe‘Subset&Process’tab,amapisshownwiththemaximumspatialextentofthedatasetshownbyaredbox.
Abovethemapisanavigationtoolbar.Thistoolbarallowsyoutonavigatearoundthemap.Youmayzoominoroutandpanaroundthemap.Thereisalsoatoolformeasuringdistancesonthemap.
SELECTINGSPATIALLIMITS
Toselectanarea,youmayeitherdragaboundingboxaroundtheareawiththeselectiontool(outlinedaboveinred),oryoumaymanuallyinputaboundingboxusingtheAOItool(AreaofInterest).WiththeAOItool,youmaymanuallyinputthecoordinatesofaspatialboundingboxforthedata.Youmayalsosaveboundingboxesforfutureuse.
Unfortunately,thecurrentreleaseoftheEDCcannotdownloaddatawhichspanstheprimemeridian(0longitude).IfyouinputanAOIwhichspans0longitude,onlythedatawhichliestotheeast(longitude>0)willbedownloaded.Inordertogettheentireregionofdata,youshoulddownloadthedataintwopieces:
onepiecewithwestlongitudeandonepiecewitheastlongitude.YoumaythenmergethedatainArcGIS.SeethefollowingESRItechnicalarticleonmergingmultibandrasters:
SELECTINGTEMPORALLIMITS
Onceyouhavedefinedthespatialareathatyouwishtodownload,definethetimesofthedatathatyouwishtodownload.ThisisdonebymanipulatingthetimebaratthebottomoftheEDC.Inthetimebar,thegreenpointerrepresentsthebeginningtimeofthedatatobedownloaded,andtheredpointerrepresentstheendingtime.Youcanalsoinputstartandendtimesmanually(hittheenterbuttononceyou’vechangedthestartorendtimestoupdatethepointerlocations).Ifyouselectabeginningtimeinthetimebarthatdoesnotexactlycoincidewithatimeinthedataset,thentheEDCwilldownloadtheclosestprevioustimestep,aswellasallthedatathatfallsbetweenthebeginningandendtimes.
Justabovethetimebar,thetimeintervalbetweenconsecutivetimesofthedatasetisdisplayed.Thistimeintervalistheaverageintervalbetweenconsecutivetimestepsfortheselecteddataset.Itiscalculatedbydividingtherangeoftimesteps(lasttime–firsttime)bythenumberoftimesteps.Theactualtimebetweentwoconsecutivedatapointsmightbedifferentthanthisvalue.
DOWNLOADINGRASTERDATA
Ifthedatathatyouaredownloadingisrasterdata,thenselectthe‘Raster’tabinthe‘OutputOptions’windowintherighthandsideoftheEDC.Checktheboxnexttothevariablethatyouwouldliketodownload.Dependingonthespecificdatasetyouareconnectedto,theremightbemorethanonevariableinthislist.Ifyouaredownloadingthedataasaraster,youcanonlydownloadonevariableatatime.
Onceyouhaveselectedtherastervariable,clickthe‘Process’buttontodownloadthedata.Youwillbeaskedtogiveanameforthedata.Onceyouclickthe‘Process’button,theEDCsubsetsthedataontheserver,onlydownloadingthedataforthetimeandspacethatyouhaveselected.ThedataisinitiallydownloadedinnetCDFformat.Oncethedownloadiscomplete,theEDCwillclose.ThedownloadednetCDFfileisthenconvertedtoanArcGISrasterusingArcGIS’sconversiontools(onlyavailableinArcGISversion9.2orlater).BepatientwhileArcGISconvertsthefile.ThiscanoftenbealengthystepandthereisnoprogressbartoshowthatArcMapisstillworkingontheconversion.
TheresultingArcGISlayerisamultibandraster.Thedatadimensionusedasthebanddimensionisspecifiedinthe‘OutputOptions’windowoftheEDC.Thisbanddimensionisusuallytime,butcanbeanotherdimension(suchasdepthorheight)ifthatdimensionisavailable.Ifthedatasetcontainsmorethan3dimensions,thenyoumustselectthevalueofthe4thdimensioninthe‘SelectLevel’menu.Forexample,ifthedatasethasdimensionsof‘latitude’,‘longitude’,‘altitude’,and‘time’,andyouselect‘time’asthebanddimension,thenyouwouldhavetopickthealtitudelevelofthedata.Somedatasetsmighthavea4thdimensioncontainingonlyonevalue(e.g.–0meteraltitudeforsealeveldata).
DOWNLOADINGFEATUREDATA
IfyourdataismoresuitedtoanArcGISfeaturelayerratherthananArcGISraster,thenyoumaychoosetodownloadthedataasafeaturedataset.Unlikearaster,afeaturedatasetcancontainmultipledatavariables.Acommontypeoffeaturedatasetiscurrentorwinddata.Thesedatasetsconsistof(atleast)twovariables,au-component(zonal)andav-component(meridional).
Whendownloadingfeaturedatasets,selectthespatialandtemporallimitsofthedatayouwishtodownload.Selectthe‘Feature’tabinthe‘OutputOptions’window.Selectthevariablesyouwishtoimportinthe‘Variables’window.
Inthe‘Feature’tab,selectthelevelofthedatayouaredownloading(seethesectionon‘DownloadingRasterData’forinformationondatalevels).Ifthedatayouwanttodownloadisvectordata(suchaswindorcurrentdata),thenselectthe‘AsVectors’boxandselectthevariableswhichrepresenttheuandvcomponentsofthevectors.ThesevariableswillbeusedtocalculatethespeedanddirectionfieldsneededbyArcGIStodisplayvectors.
Sometimes,youmaywanttocombinevariableswhicharepresentindifferentdatasetsintothesameArcGISfeaturedataset.Inthissituation,subsetandprocessthefirstdatasetyouwantbyconnectingtothedatasetandselectingthespatialandtemporallimits.Thenclickthe“AddDataset”button,locatedabovethemaptoolbar.ClickingthisbuttonwillbringyoubacktotheTHREDDScatalog/datasetselectionpage.Selecttheseconddatasetyouwishtoadd,andclick“SubsetandProcess”.Bothvariableswillnowbevisibleinthe‘Variables’window.Repeattoaddadditionaldatasetvariables.Notethatinordertomergedatasets,themetadataforthetwodatasetsbeingmergedmustbeexactlyidentical.
Onceyouhaveselectedthespatialandtemporallimitsandselectedallthevariablesyouwishtoincludeinthefeaturedataset,clickthe‘Process’buttontoimportthedataintoArcGIS.Thedownloadingprocessissimilartotherastercase.First,theEDCsubsetsanddownloadsthedataasanetCDFfile.Then,ArcGISconvertsthisnetCDFfiletoafeaturelayer.BepatientwhileArcGISconvertsthenetCDF!
VIEWINGDATAINARCGIS
OncethedatahasbeendownloadedandconvertedbyArcGIStools,itwillbedisplayedinthecurrentArcMapwindow.
ByrightclickingonthedatasetintheTableofContentsandselecting‘Properties’,youcanseethepropertiesofthedatathatwasjustimported.
Thedatasetpropertieswindowforarasterdatasetsshowsinformationsuchasthesourceandfilelocation,thespatialextentofthedata,thenumberofbands(thenumberofbandsisequaltothenumberoftimesteps),thecellsizeoftheraster,andthespatialreference(alldataisimportedwiththeWGS1984spatialreference).Intheprope
