Theworldartmarkethadalreadybeenlosingmomentumforawhileafterrisingvertiginouslysince

2003.Atitspeakin2007itwasworthsome$65billion,reckonsClareMcAndrew,founderofArts

Economics,aresearchfirm—doublethefigurefiveyearsearlier.Sincethenitmayhavecomedown

to$50billion.Butthemarketgeneratesinterestfarbeyonditssizebecauseitbringstogether

greatwealth,enormousegos,greed,passionandcontroversyinawaymatchedbyfewother

industries.

IntheweeksandmonthsthatfollowedMrHirst’ssale,spendingofanysortbecamedeeply

unfashionable,especiallyinNewYork,wherethebail-outofthebankscoincidedwiththelossof

thousandsofjobsandthefinancialdemiseofmanyart-buyinginvestors.Intheartworldthat

meantcollectorsstayedawayfromgalleriesandsalerooms.Salesofcontemporaryartfellbytwo-

ThecurrentdownturnintheartmarketistheworstsincetheJapanesestoppedbuying

Impressionistsattheendof1989,amovethatstartedthemostseriouscontractioninthemarket

sincethesecondworldwar.Thistimeexpertsreckonthatpricesareabout40%downontheirpeak

onaverage,thoughsomehavebeenfarmorevolatile.ButEdwardDolman,Christie’schief

executive,says:

“I’mprettyconfidentwe’reatthebottom.”

Whatmakesthisslumpdifferentfromthelast,hesays,isthattherearestillbuyersinthe
