Abstract
GonewiththeWindwaswrittenbyAmericanfamousfeministMargaretMitchell.It’sanovelaboutromanticlovestoryandcivilwar.AfterGonewiththeWindpublished,Scarlett,theheroineofthenovel,becomesthecenterofthediscussion.Andthispaperwilldiscusstheheroine’suniquecharactersfrombravery,independenceandstrongmind.I’lldiscussherbraveryfromherrebelliousbehaviorduringcourtship,widowedanddivorcedperiods(love).I’lldiscussherindependencefromherbehaviorofoperatingTaraandmillandothercommercialthoughtsandbehaviorsaftershemarried(economy).AndI’lldiscussherstrongmindfromheractiveattitudetowardssurvival,Taraandfuture(hope).Fromthethreeaspects,wecanfindScarlett’sspecialfeminismeasily.

ThebackgroundofthenovelisCivilWar.Duringthattime,thesocietyisunderthecontrolofmen.Womenwhoarepassivearesubordinatetothemen.Eventhattheydon’thavetheirownthoughts.Theyhavetolearnthetraditionofgreatladies,learnhowtoreleaseherburdenandstillkeepcharmingwhentheyarestillalittlegirl.Astheygrowing,theyshouldknowhowtosmile,howtowalk,howtomakethemlookmorebeautiful,howtoeatlikeabird,andhowtobecomemorecharming.Whentheyfacethemen,likethemammysays:
“Youngmissesshouldcas’downeyesan’say“well,sun,Ahmout”an’“Jes’asyousay,‘suh’.”(Mitchell,2001:
71)Aswives,theyarewantedtobewhollyhousewives.Theyshouldbeobedientanddowhattheirhusbandhastoldthem.ScarlettO’Hara,theheroineofthenovel,justlivesinthissociety.Butsheisnotthegirlwhofitsfortheserules.ThestorytellsusthatScarlettwhowasborninaveryrichfamilychaseswhatshereallywantsbravelyindespiteofhermother’sinstruction,people’sdiscussingandsociety’sobject.Whenshefaceswar,death,hungerandmanyotherdifficulties,shedoesnotyield.Shehurdlesthesewithherbravery,independentandherstrongmind.
Becauseofherunusualcharacters,shebecomesthefocusofauthor’sdiscussion.Insomeone’seyes,Scarlettisaselfishandcruelegoist.Shecan’tbearthatthemandoesnotloveherwhilesheisintheseaoflove.SosheclapsAshleywhensheisrefusedbyhim.Andinordertoavoidbeingrobbed,shekilledaYankeesoldier.
Insomeone’seyes,Scarlettisacallousbusinesswoman.Sheemploysprisonersinordertoabatetheexpenditure.Andsheemploysaforemantotreatthoseprisonersbadly.
SomeauthorsthinkthatScarlettisastrong-mindedwoman.Becausewhensheconfrontswar,poverty,hunger.Shecansurvivefromthesedifficultiesandevenmaintainthefamily’sexpenditure.NomatterwhichtypeofwomenScarlettbelongsto,almosteveryscholarwhostudiesthisnoveladmitsthatScarlettistherepresentationofthefemaleofNewAge.Sheisbrave,independentandstrong-minded.Shehasherownthoughtandsheknowswhatshereallywants.Shechasesthefreedomandsheknowsthetruthoflife—onecansurviveonlyifshekeepsthepaceofthedevelopmentofthesociety.Allofthesecharactersaretheattributesofarousalself-conscious.
ForeignscholarsanalyzeandresearchonScarletthumanityandthecivilwarperiod,sothattodiscussmoralnatureofhumanity(goodorevil).Domesticscholarsmainlystudypositivepersonalityfromtwoaspects.Theyholdonthispointthatenvironmentalchangecanmakepeoplebedifferent.Theywanttoprovethatenvironmentcanchangepeople.
ThisthesiswillanalyzeScarlett’spreeminentcharactersindetails.Thethesiswillbedividedintothreeparts.ThefirstpartwillemphasizeScarlett’sbraveryofchallengingthetraditionalconventions.Thesecondpartwillputemphasisonherindependentcharacter.Thelastpartwillstudyherstrongwill.Now,let’sstarttoanalysishercharacters.
Scarlett,theheroineofthisnovel,livesinatraditionalsociety.Atfirst,shetriesherbesttobearightgirlandfollowthetraditionalconventions.Buthernaturecharacterdoesnotfitforthese.

Becauseshewantsbefree.Shejustwantstodoandsaywhatshewants.Shecan’tbearthebondage.Thatisthereasonwhyshedoessomanystrangethings.Inthefollowingpart,thethesiswillgiveusthreetypicalthingsshehasdone.
2TheBraveryofChallengingtraditionalconventions
Scarlettisalwaysbraveonlovingissues.Shechallengestraditionalconventionsbecauseshewantstobefreeonlove.Nowwewilldiscussherbraveryfromherlove.Scarlettshowedwhatpeopledon’texpecttoseeduringthatperiod.
Inthatnovel,thefirsteventwhichshowScarlettchallengestraditionalconventionsisthebehaviorin12OakParkonapicnic.ShesendsherlovetoAshleyandevenproposeselopeideas.Forthewoman"alltheirlivesarewaiting,"Scarlettmakesdifferentthings.Nowsheforgets“lady”manner,accordingtothepatriarchalsociety,sheshouldfeelashamed,orpretendtocry.ButScarlett’braverydoesnotallowhertoyieldtoman.Scarlettisnotacommonwoman.Shewouldnotsufferanymanandanytraditionalconventions.
