Naturalismisacriticaltermappliedtothemethodofliterarycompositionthataimsatadetached,scientificobjectivityinthetreatmentofnaturalman.Itisthusmoreinclusiveandlessselectivethanrealism,andholdstothephilosophyofdeterminism.Itconceivesofmanascontrolledbyhisinstinctsorhispassions,orbyhissocialandeconomicenvironmentandcircumstances.Sinceinthisviewmanhasnofreewill,thenaturalisticwriterdoesnotattempttomakemoraljudgements,outgrowthof19th-centuryscientificthought,followinginthegeneralthebiographicalfeterminismofDarwin'stheory,ortheeconomicdeterminismofMars.Inaword,naturalismisevolvedfromrealismwhentheauthor'stoneinwritingbecomeslessseriousandlesssympatheticbutmoreironicandmorepessimistic.Itisnomorethanadifferentphilosophicalapproachtoreality,ortohumanexistence.
