Testformat

TheIELTStestassessesyourabilitiesinlistening,reading,writingandspeaking–inlessthanthreehours.

Therearetwotypesof IELTS:

 AcademicandGeneralTraining.ListeningandSpeakingarethesameforbothtests,butthesubjectmatteroftheReadingandWritingsectionsdiffersdependingonwhichtestyoutake.

TheListening,ReadingandWritingsectionsofallIELTStestsarecompletedonthesameday,withnobreaksinbetweenthem.

TheSpeakingsection,however,canbecompleteduptoaweekbeforeoraftertheothertests.Yourtestcentrewilladvise.

Thetotaltesttimeis2hoursand45minutes.

Assessorswillbelookingforevidenceofyourabilitytounderstandthemainideasanddetailedfactualinformation,theopinionsandattitudesofspeakers,thepurposeofanutteranceandevidenceofyourabilitytofollowthedevelopmentofideas.

Paperformat

Therearefoursectionswithtenquestionseach.Thequestionsaredesignedsothattheanswersappearintheordertheyareheardintheaudio.

Thefirsttwosectionsdealwithsituationssetineverydaysocialcontexts.InSection1,thereisaconversationbetweentwospeakers（forexample,aconversationabouttravelarrangements）,andinSection2,thereisamonologuein（forexample,aspeechaboutlocalfacilities）.Thefinaltwosectionsdealwithsituationssetineducationalandtrainingcontexts.InSection3,thereisaconversationbetweentwomainspeakers（forexample,twouniversitystudentsindiscussion,perhapsguidedbyatutor）,andinSection4,thereisamonologueonanacademicsubject.

Therecordingsareheardonlyonce.Theyincludearangeofaccents,includingBritish,Australian,NewZealand,AmericanandCanadian.

Timing

Matchingassessestheskilloflisteningfordetailandwhetheratesttakercanunderstandinformationgiveninaconversationonaneverydaytopic,suchasthedifferenttypesofhotelorguesthouseaccommodation.Italsoassessestheabilitytofollowaconversationbetweentwopeople.Itmayalsobeusedtoassesstesttakers’abilitytorecogniserelationshipsandconnectionsbetweenfactsinthelisteningtext.

Onemarkisawardedforeachcorrectanswerinthe40-itemtest.Careshouldbetakenwhenwritinganswersontheanswersheetaspoorspellingandgrammararepenalised.

Testformat–Reading

TheReadingsectionconsistsof40questions,designedtotestawiderangeofreadingskills.Theseincludereadingforgist,readingformainideas,readingfordetail,skimming,understandinglogicalargumentandrecognisingwriters'opinions,attitudesandpurpose.

IELTSAcademictest -thisincludesthreelongtextswhichrangefromthedescriptiveandfactualtothediscursiveandanalytical.Thesearetakenfrombooks,journals,magazinesandnewspapers. Theyhavebeenselectedforanon-specialistaudiencebutareappropriateforpeopleenteringuniversitycoursesorseekingprofessionalregistration.
