In1809,SequoyahdecidedtogivetheCherokeetheirown“talkingleaves”.AtfirsthetriedtomakeadifferentsymbolforeverywordintheCherokeelanguage.Butinthatcase,therewouldbesomanysymbolsandtoohardforpeopletoremember,sohedecidedtomakeapictureforeachsyllable(音节).Aftermuchhardwork,Sequoyahinvented85symbols.Inordertoseewhetheritwouldwork,hehelpedhissix-year-olddaughterAyokalearneachsymbolandfoundshecouldlearntoreadandwriteveryquickly.Sequoyah’sinventionwasasuccess!

Beforelong,Sequoyah’swritingsystemhadspreadfarandwide.Cherokeepeoplelivinginalldifferentpartsofthecountrylearnedtoreadandwrite.In1825,Sequoyah’ssystemwasmadetheofficialwrittenlanguageforCherokeepeople.Tothisday,CherokeespeakersstilluseSequoyah’swritingsystem.InsomepartsoftheUnitedStates,youcanseestreetsignsandbillboardswritteninbothEnglishandCherokee.SequoyahwillalwaysberememberedforhisimportantcontributiontoCherokeepeople.
