ASDisanervedevelopmentaldisordercharacterizedbydamageinsocial-communicationskillsandrestrictedandrepetitivebehaviors.WhilemanysignsofASDarepresentbeforeagetwo,themajorityofchildrenwithASDarenotdiagnoseduntilafteragefour,whichmeansthatcorrectivetreatmentsarestartedlater,delayingtheirpotentialimpact.

OneofthechallengestoearlierdetectionofASDistofindwaystoidentifychildrenatriskforthedisordersoonerandinchildrenwithspeechdelays.SomeoftheearliestandcontinuoussignsofASDinvolveauditory(听觉)communication,however,mosttestsrelyonspeech,andarcoftenineffectiveinsmallchildrenwhohavecommunicationdelays.

Inthenew,study,researchersusedatechniquethatmeasureswhatarecalledotoacousticemissions(耳声发射).Thetestissimilartothescreeningthatmanynewbornsmustundergobeforeleavingthehospitaltocheckforhearingproblems.Usingmicrophoneearplugs,theresearcherswereabletomeasurehearingdeficienciesbylisteningforsignsthatthecarishavingtroubleprocessingsounds.Specifically,themicrophonecandetectminutesoundemissionmadebyinnerearouterhaircellsinresponsetoevenclickingsounds.Ifthesecellsarenotfunctioningproperly,thedevicefailstodetectanemission,indicatingthatinnercarfunctionisdamaged
