NorthernMississippi—calledtheDelta—wasthecenterofthebluestradition.Bythe1920s,theDeltahadmanyclubs,so-calledjukejoints.AfricanAmericanslistenedanddancedtomusicintheseclubs.Someofthegreatestbluesmenandwomenperformedthere.

Blueshaveasoulfulsoundthatiseasytorecognize.Themusicalnotesareoften“bent”.Thatis,theyarechangedslightlytogiveasongmorestrength.Whatevertheirorigin,thesebentnotesmostoftendefinetheblues.
