ofusfailinoureffortsatself-improvementbecauseourschemesaretooambitiousandweneverhavetimetocarrythemout.Wealsomakethefundamentalerrorofannouncingourresolutionstoeverybodysothatwelookevenmorefoolishwhenweslipbackintoourbadoldways.Awareofthesepitfalls,thisyearIattemptedtokeepmyresolutions

tomyself.Ilimitedmyselftotwomodestambitions:

todophysicalexerciseeverymorningandtoreadmoreofan

evening.Anall-nightpartyonNewYear'sEveprovidedmewithagoodexcusefornotcarryingouteitherofthesenewresolutionsonthefirstdayoftheyear,butonthesecond,Iappliedmyselfassiduouslytothetask.

ThedailyexerciseslastedonlyelevenminutesandIproposedtodothemearlyinthemorningbeforeanyonehadgotup.Theself-disciplinerequiredtodragmyselfoutof

tions,Isatdownatthebreakfasttableinanexhaustedcondition.Itwasthisthatbetrayedme.Thenextmorningthewholefamilytroopedintowatchtheperformance.Thatwasreallyunsettling,butIfendedoffthetauntsandjibesof

thefamilygood-humouredlyandsooneverybodygotusedtotheidea.However,myenthusiasmwaned.ThetimeIspentatexercisesgraduallydiminished.Littlebylittletheelevenminutesfelltozero.ByJanuary10th,IwasbacktowhereIhadstartedfrom.IarguedthatifIspentlesstime

exhaustingmyselfatexercisesinthemorning,IwouldkeepmymindfreshforreadingwhenIgotHomeformworkResistingthehypnotizingeffectoftelevision,Isatinmyroomfora

feweveningswithmyeyesgluedtoabook.Onenight,however,feelingcoldandlonely,Iwentdownstairsandsatinfrontofthetelevisionpretendingtoread.Thatprovedtobemy

undoing,forIsoongotbacktomyoldbadhabitofdozing

offinfrontofthescreen.Istillhaven'tgivenupmy

resolutiontodomorereading.Infact,Ihavejustboughta
