TheseadultswerethendividedintogroupsthatrandomlyreceiveddifferentcombinationsofvitaminsB,CandE,themineralseleniumoraplacebo(安慰剂).

MostpatientswithHIVbecomedeficientinthesevitamins,whichhelpboostimmunity.Baumsaidsheinitiallythoughtthemultivitaminsaloneorseleniumalonewouldbeeffectiveinstrengtheningtheimmunesystem,butfoundthattobeincorrect.

“Weweresurprisedtofindthatonlythecombinationwaseffective,”saidBaum.

ResearchshowsthatwhenpeoplewithHIVreceiveanti-retroviraldrugs(抗逆转录病毒药物)shortlyafterinfection,theycanremainhealthyandarelesslikelytopassthevirustotheirsexpartners.Formanycountries,however,thecostoftheseanti-AIDSdrugsisstillprohibitive.Baumsaidthevitaminandmineralcombinationtherapyshouldhelplowincomecountriesbettercontrolthevirus.

“AsimplemultivitaminsupplementationwithseleniumprovidedearlyinHIVdiseasecanactuallyslowtheHIVdiseaseprogressionanditissafe.Itislowcostandit

shouldbeprovidedveryearlyinHIVinfection,”saidBaum.

Baumsaidthesupplementsarenotmeanttoreplaceanti-retroviraltherapy,butcanhelpthosewhocannotobtainthedrugs.

Dr.AnthonyFauci,aworldrenownedexpertonAIDS,disagrees.

“Ihaven’treadthepaper,buthavingtakencareofHIV-infectedindividualsforthreedecades,I

woulddoubtthatvitaminsaregoingtohaveamajoreffecton suppressingthevirus,"saidFauci.
