1.it’sappropriateatthistimeofmajorchangesintheinternationalscenetotakealookatsomeofthereasonsforthedisappointingresultsofattemptsatcommunications.

3.Thetendencyforallpeopletoreproduce,groupintofamiliesorsocieties,developalanguage,andadapttotheirenvironmentisparticularlydeceivingbecauseitleadstotheexpectationthattheformsofthesebehaviorsandtheattitudesandvaluessurroundingthemwillalsobesimilar.
4.it’scomfortingtobelievethat“peoplearepeople”and“deepdownweareallalike,”butadeterminedsearchforroofofthisleadstodisappointment.
5.Promisingarethecross-culturalstudiesseekingtosupportDarwin’stheorythatfacialexpressionsareuniversalandresearchersfoundthattheparticularvisiblepatternontheface,thecombinationofmusclescontractedforanger,fear,surprise,sadness,disgust,andhappinessisthesameforallmembersofourspecies,butthisseemshelpfuluntilitisrealizedthatperson’sculturalupbringingdetermineswhetherornotthatemotionwillbedisplayedorsuppressed,aswellasonwhichoccasionsandtowhatdegree.
6.Sincethereseemstobenouniversalsof“humannature”thatcanbeusedasabasisforautomaticunderstanding,wemusttreateachencounterasanindividualcase,searchingforwhateverperceptionsandcommunicationmeansareheldincommonandproceedfromthere.

8.Onlywiththeassumptionofdifferences,however,canreactionsandinterpretationsadjustedtofit“what’shappening.”Otherwisesomeoneislikelytomisreadsignsandjudgethesceneethnocentrically.
9.Thenativeinhabitantsarelikelytolulledintotheexpectationthat,sincetheforeignpersonisdressedappropriatelyandspeaksomeofthelanguage,heorshewillalsohavesimilarnonverbalcodes,thoughtsandfeelings.
10.Aworselanguageproblemisthetenacitywithwhichsomeonewillclingtojustonemeaningofawordorphraseinthenewlanguage,regardlessofconnotationorcontext.
11.Theyabstractwhateverfitsintotheirpersonalworldofrecognitionandtheninterpretitthroughtheframeofreferenceoftheirownculture.
12.itismoredifficulttonotecorrectlytheunspokencodesoftheotherculturethatarefurtherfromawareness,suchasthehandlingoftimeandspatialrelationshipsandsubtlesignsofrespectofformality.

14.ThestereotypethatArabsare“inflammable”maycausetheUSstudentstokeeptheirdistanceorevenalertauthoritieswhenananimatedandnoisygroupfromtheMiddleEastgathers.
AprofessorwhoexpectseveryonefromIndonesia,Mexico,andmanyothercountriesto“bargain”mayunfairlyinterpretahesitationorrequestfromaninternationalstudentasamovetomanipulatepreferentialtreatment.
15.StereotypeshelpdowhatErnestBeckersaystheanxiety-pronehumanracemustdo——reducethethreatoftheunknownbymakingtheworldpredictable.
16.Theyarealsosustainedandfedbythetendencytoperceiveselectivelyonlythosepiecesofnewinformationthatcorrespondtotheimageheld.

18.Iwincedathisbewilderedexpression,realizingthathadIcomebeforeattendingtheconference,I,alsoevaluatingtheweatheras“notverygood,”wouldhavesharedthegroup’sinferencethathecouldnotbeserious.
19.Communicationcutoffcausedbyimmediateevaluationisheightenedwhenfeelingsandemotionsaredeeplyinvolved;yetthisisjustthetimewhenlisteningwithunderstandingismostneeded.Lookandlistenempatheticallyratherthanthroughthethickscreenofvaluejudgmentsthatimpedeafairunderstanding.
20.Moderatearousalandpositiveattitudesprepareonetomeetchallengeswithenergy,buthigharousal,causedbybuildupofcontinuedmoderatestress,depletesthebody’senergyreservequicklyanddefensemustbeusedwhetherornotthepersonwillsit.
21.Ifthestayinaforeigncountryisprolongedandthenewcomercannotletdownhisorherhighalertlevel,the“cultureshock”phenomenonoccurs.

24.Hemustbeabletofeelhiswayintointimatecontactwiththesealienvalues,attitudes,andfeelings.
