Intoday\'shectic,fast-pacedworldandwiththeboomingeconomy,stressisourconstantcompanion.Itcomesfrommentaloremotionalactivityandphysicalactivity.Toomuchemotionalstresscanresultinphysicalillness,suchashighbloodpressure,ulcers,asthma,irritablecolon,headaches,orevenheartdisease.Ontheotherhand,physicalstressfromworkorexerciserarelycausessuchailments.Infact,physicalexercisecanhelpyoutorelaxandtohandleyourmentaloremotionalstress.

HansSelye,M.D.,arecognizedexpertinthefield,hasdefinedstressasa\"nonspecificresponseofthebodytoademand\".Thekeytoreducingstressislearninghowourbodiesrespondtothosedemands.Whenstressbecomesprolongedorparticularlyfrustrating,itcanbecomeharmful-causingdistressor\"badstress\".Recognizingtheearlysignsofdistressandthendoingsomethingaboutthemcanmakeasignificantdifferenceinthequalityofyourlife.

Inordertousestressinapositivewayandpreventitfrombecomingdistress,youshouldbeawareofyourownreactionstostressfulevents.Thebodyrespondstostressbygoingthroughspecificstages:

(1)alarm,

(2)resistance,and(3)exhaustion.Musclestense,bloodpressureandheartraterise,andadrenalineandotherstress-triggeredhormonesthatincreasethelevelofalertnessarereleased.Ifthestress-causingconditionscontinue,yourbodywillneedtimetomakerepairs,ifthathappens,youeventuallymaydevelopaphysicalproblemthatisrelatedtostress,suchasmigraineheadaches,highbloodpressure,backaches,orinsomnia.That\'swhywhenstressoccursit\'simportantthatyourecognizeanddealwithitinapositiveway.Whileit\'simpossibletolivecompletelyfreeofstressanddistress,itispossibletopreventsomedistressaswellastominimizeitsimpactwhenitcan\'tbeavoided.TheU.S.DepartmentofHealthandHumanServicesoffersthefollowingsuggestionsforwaystohandlestress.

ShareYourStress
