EmilyDickinson
EmilyDickinson(1830-1886)wasanAmericanlyricalpoet,andanobsessivelyprivatewriter--onlysevenofhersome1800poemswerepublishedduringherlifetime.Dickinsonwithdrewfromsocialcontactattheageof23anddevotedherselfinsecretintowriting.
DickinsonwasborninAmherst,Massachusetts,toafamilywellknownforeducationalandpoliticalactivity.Herfather,anorthodoxCalvinist,wasalawyerandtreasurerofAmherstCollege,andalsoservedinCongress.ShewaseducatedatAmherstAcademy(1834-47)andMountHolyokeFemaleSeminary(1847-48).Around1850Dickinsonstartedtowritepoems,firstinfairlyconventionalstyle,butaftertenyearsofpracticeshebegantogiveroomforexperiments.Fromc.1858sheassembledmanyofherpoemsinpacketsof'fascicles',whichsheboundherselfwithneedleandthread.
AftertheCivilWarDickinsonrestrictedhercontactsoutsideAmhersttoexchangeofletters,dressedonlyinwhiteandsawfewofthevisitorswhocametomeether.Infact,mostofhertimeshespentinherroom.Althoughshelivedasecludedlife,herlettersrevealknowledgeofthewritingsofJohnKeats,JohnRuskin,andSirThomasBrowne.Dickinson'semotionalliferemainsmysterious,despitemuchspeculationaboutapossibledisappointedloveaffair.Twocandidateshavebeenpresented:
ReverendCharlesWadsworth,withwhomshecorresponded,andSamuelBowles,editoroftheSpringfieldRepublican,towhomsheaddressedmanypoems.
AfterDickinson'sdeathin1886,hersisterLaviniabroughtoutherpoems.Sheco-editedthreevolumesfrom1891to1896.Despiteitseditorialimperfections,thefirstvolumebecamepopular.Intheearlydecadesofthetwentiethcentury,MarthaDickinsonBianchi,thepoet'sniece,transcribedandpublishedmorepoems,andin1945BoltsOfMelodyessentiallycompletedthetaskofbringingDickinson'spoemstothepublic.ThepublicationofThomasH.Johnson's1955editionofEmilyDickinson'spoemsfinallygavereadersacompleteandaccuratetext.
Dickinson'sworkshavehadconsiderableinfluenceonmodernpoetry.Herfrequentuseofdashes,sporadiccapitalizationofnouns,off-rhymes,brokenmetre,unconventionalmetaphorshavecontributedherreputationasoneofthemostinnovativepoetsof19th-centuryAmericanliterature.Laterfeministcriticshavechallengedthepopularconceptionofthepoetasareclusive,eccentricfigure,andunderlinedherintellectualandartisticsophistication.
SomepoemsofEmilyDickinsonseemtobetranscendental,yetnotquite.Sheappearstosearchfortheuniversaltruthsandinvestigatethecircumstancesofthehumancondition:
senseoflife,immortality,God,faith,placeofmanintheuniverse.EmilyDickinsonquestionsabsolutesandherargumentationismultisided.Thepoetictechniquethatsheusesinvolvesmakingabstractconcrete,whichcreatesastrikingimagerylikethatofahandofthewindcombingtheSky.
