TheTechnologyMissionofCharlotteMecklenburgPublicSchoolSystemistoensureaccesstoappropriatetechnologyinoureducationalcommunitytosupportandenhancestudentlearning,staffinstruction,schoolcommunicationanddatamanagement.

TheCharlotteMecklenburgPublicSchoolfulfillsitstechnologymissionbyofferinganinstitutionalnetworkbetweentheschoolsandInternetaccessforstaffandstudents.ThisisreferredtoastheCMSNetwork.Ourgoalinprovidingthisservicetostudentsistopromoteeducationalexcellencebyfacilitatingresourcesharing,innovationandcommunication.

ItistheresponsibilityofallCharlotteMecklenburgSchoolemployeestoreadandsignthepolicyanditistheresponsibilitytotheCMSPrincipalstodenyInternetaccesstostaffmemberswhohavenotreadandsignedthepolicy.

􀀂Allstaffwillhaveane-mailaccount.

UnacceptableUses

TheuseoftheCMSNetworkisprovidedtofacilitateeducation.Inappropriateusewillresultincancellationofcomputer(internet)privileges.Usersshouldnotexpectprivacyinthecontentsofpersonalfilesonthedistrictsystem.RoutinemaintenanceandmonitoringoftheCMSNetworkmayleadtodiscoverythatastaffmemberhasviolatedthisPolicy,orthelaw.Alle-mailisconsideredpublicrecord.

TheSuperintendentofSchools,AssistantSuperintendentofCurriculum,TelecommunicationsTechnologySpecialistordesigneeshallhavetherighttoaccesse-mail.Thefollowingunacceptableusesinclude(butarenotlimitedto):

􀀁IllegalActivities

a.Transmissionofcopyrightortradeinformation.

b.Transmissionofobsceneorthreateningmaterial.

c.StaffshallnotattempttogainunauthorizedaccesstotheCMSNetworkortoanyothercomputersystemthroughtheCMSNetworkorgobeyondauthorizedaccess.Thisincludesattemptingtologinthroughanotherperson'saccountoraccessanotherperson'sfiles.Theseactionsconstitutevandalismandareillegal,evenifonlyforthepurposeof"browsing."

d.StaffshallnotusetheCMSNetworkforcommercialorpersonalpurposes,whichincludesoffering,providing,orpurchasingproductsorservicesthroughtheCMSNetwork.

􀀁SystemSecurity

a.Staffareresponsiblefortheirindividualfileaccountandshouldtakeallreasonableprecautiontopreventothersfromaccessingtheirfiles.Undernoconditionsshouldstaffprovidetheirpasswordtoanotherperson.

b.Staffshallnotdownloadortransferfileswithoutthepropersoftwarelicense.

c.StaffshallnotmakedeliberateattemptstodisrupttheCMScomputersystem,orotherdistrictcomputersystemsandnetworks,nordestroydatabyspreadingcomputervirusesorbyanyothermeans.Theseactionsareillegal.

 

TEACHERE-MAILUSEPOLICY

•E-mailwillbeusedasanintegralformofcommunicationwithintheCharlotteMecklenburgPublicSchoolnetwork.Teachersareencouragedtousethisformofcommunicationtofacilitatecommunicationwithparents.

•Facultye-mailnameswillbefirstname.lastname@cms.k12.nc.us.

•Inmanyschools,teachersareexpectedtochecktheire-mailatthebeginningandendofeachschooldaytokeepcurrentwithnews,meetinginformation,andadministrativeupdatesandpolicieswithinthebuilding.

STUDENTINTERNETACCEPTABLEUSEPOLICY

WestMecklenburgisfortunatetohaveinternetaccessintheclassroom,mediacenterandcomputerlabs.Inordertopromotetheexpectationofappropriateuseofthismediumforeducationalpurposes,allstudentsarerequiredtohaveasignedcopyofthe

CharlotteMecklenburgSchoolsAcceptableUsePolicyonfile.

 

CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURGSCHOOLS

BEGINNINGTEACHERSUPPORTPROGRAM

Application

Charlotte-MecklenburgSchoolsprovidesaBeginningTeacherSupportProgram(BTSP)forteachersintheirfirst-thirdyearsofpractice.Theinductionprogramprovidesthestructurethatmaximizesbeginningteacherlearninginthecontextofclassroomexperience.Newteacherslearnfromveteranteachers;schoolsincreasethepossibilityofretainingstrong,well-trainededucators;andmostimportant,studentachievementcanbeelevated.

Standards

WestMecklenburg’sinductionprogramsshallmeetthefollowingrequirements:

•Anorientationforbeginningteacherandallotherincomingteachersorientationprogramforbeginningteachersandallotherincomingteachers

•Assignmentofasupportteamthatshallconsistof,butnotbelimitedto,theacademicfacilitatoramentoranadministratorqualifiedtoevaluateteachers,andaleadteacher.

•Opportunitiestoparticipateinprofessionaldevelopmentandcommonplanning(i.e.:

CriticalFriends,Math,Reading,etc.)

Theintentoftheinductionprogramistoprovideteacherswithasystematicstructureofsupportthathelpsthembecomefamiliarwiththeirschoolanddistrictrefinetheirpracticeandbetterunderstandtheirprofessionalresponsibilities.Theprogramisanintegralpartofateacher’sfirstyearofteachingandisthebeginningofateacher’sprofessionaldevelopmentactivities.

TheinductionprogramisafundamentalpartoftheWestMecklenburg’sProfessionalDevelopmentPlanaswellastheschoolImprovementPlan.

Mentoring

Mentoringprovidesthebeginningteacherwithaoneononerelationshipwithanexperiencedteacher.Thementoringrelationshipcanbeveryrewarding,bothprofessionallyandpersonally,forthebeginningteacherandthementor.Whilethebeginningteacheracquiressupportandapracticalunderstandingofteachingtroughthementoringrelationship,thementorteacherisabletoreflectuponandimprovehis/herownpracticebysharingexperiencesandexpertise.

CoreMentoringActivities

Thementoringrelationshipisshapedbytheactivitiesthatamentorandbeginningteacherparticipateintogether.Aspartofthelicensureregulationsincludeclassroomobservationsandothermentoringactivities.TheseactivitiesshouldhelpthebeginningteacherimproveuponpracticeanddevelopanunderstandingoftheProfessionalStandardsforTeachers.Theactivitiesmayinclude:

•Meetingfrequentlyduringtheschoolyeartoplancurriculumandlessons

•Observingoneanother’sclassroom

•Co-teachingthebeginningteacher’sclass

•Analyzingandassessingthebeginningteacher’spracticeinrelationtoevaluationcriteriainordertohelpthebeginningteacherimprove.

RolesandResponsibilities

BeginningTeacher:

•Playanactiveroleinthementoringrelationship.Abeginningteachercandothisbyofferingcriticalreflectionsonhis(her)ownpracticeandidentifyingareasinwhichassistanceisneeded.

•Seekouthelp.Thebeginningteachermustunderstandthatheorshemustseekoutsupportteammembers,beforthrightincommunicatingclassroomissues,andremainopentofeedbackinordertodevelopasaprofessional.

•Observeexperienceteachersatwork.Thebeginningteachershouldadheretoascheduleofobservationsofexperiencedteachers.Thebeginningteachercouldkeepalogtorecordandreflectonthediversityoftheirstyles.

•Participateregularlyinprogramsorganizedforbeginningteachers.Theseincludepeersupportgroups,professionaldevelopmentseminarsandbeginningteacherworkshops.

•Ensureastrongstarttotheyear.Mentorscanhelpbeginningteacherslaunchintoaproductiveyearbymakingsuretheyknowwheretoo
