Smartphoneshavepushedshowroomingintothefront.Shoppersnolongerhavetowaituntiltheygethometoseeiftheycanfindacheaperpricefortheproductsthey’reconsideringbuying.Withsmartphones,consumerscannowcomparevirtualprices,atbothotherbrick-and-mortarstoresandonlineoneswhilestillinsidearetailstore.Iftheycanfindwhatthey’reseekingforlessonline,themajoritywillbeseekingthefirstexit.Arecentstudyshowedthat45percentofcustomersshoppingatbrick-and-mortarstoreswalkoutandbuytheirpurchaseonlineforadiscountofaslittleas2.5percent. 

Thisputspressureonretailerstoprovidebothanin-storeexperienceworthstayingforandanonlinepresencethatcanattractshopperswhoareshowroominginotherbusinesses.

Anotherpopularmethodtofightagainstshowroomingistogiveshopperstheabilitytobuysomethingonlineandpickitupatthestore.Thisreducesshippingcostsandgetscustomersinthestore,wheretheymaybeencouragedtomakeanadditionalpurchase.
