Althoughtheidealistwayistoachievethenoblestgoalthroughthenoblestmeans,inrealitywesometimeshavetoresorttolowmeansinordertoattainhighgoals.
A.Theoretically,themeanstakenshouldbeconsistentwiththeendsinview.
B.However,inordertorestorepeaceandsocialorder,individualstatesortheinternationalcommunityhasrepeatedlyusedforceinhistory.
C.Weshouldbealerttothepossibilitythatindividuals,organizationsorgovernmentstendtopleadaworthygoalinexcuseoftheircontemptiblemeansandprivateinterests.
Therehasbeenacontroversyovertheconcordbetweengoalsandmeansforalongtime.Somepeoplearguethatthemeansshouldnotbetraythegoal,whileothersholdthataslongasthegoalisworthy,anymeanstakentoattainitisjustifiable.AsfarasIamconcerned,Ibelievethat,althoughtheidealwayistoachievethenoblestgoalthroughthenoblestmeans,inrealitywesometimeshavetoresorttolowmeansinordertoattainhighgoals.
Theoretically,meanstakenshouldbeconsistentwiththeends.Manypeoplehavesuchopinions:
goodpeopleachievehighgoals,whilebadpeopleworkforlowones.Theheroesarealwaysdecentandcavalier,whilescoundrelsarealwaysmalevolenceandvicious.Thereforethesimpletheorythathighgoals,whicharesoughtforonlybyheroes,arealwaysattainedthroughnobleways;lowgoals,whicharesoughtforonlybymiscreant,arealwaysattainedthroughlowways.Thistheoryseemsatthefirstglancetobesound,butaretrospectofthehistoryrevealsthatthisisnotalwaysthecase.
Manyexamplesinourhistoryshowthatsometimewehavetousethelowmeansforthehighgoals.Inordertorestorethepeaceandsocialorderofchina,forceswererepeatedlyused.ChairmanMaooncesaid:
“Politicalpowergrowsoutofthebarrelofagun.”ThisgreatmanledtheChinesepeopleingoingthroughthemostarduousdaysofchina,tokeeponstrugglingagainstinvasionsofothernationsandultimatelytoachievetheindependenceofchina.ChairmanMaorealizedthatalthoughthegoalofChinesepeopleispeace,itisinevitabletoengagethepopulaceinwarsfirst.Therearemanyotherexampleswhichalsoshowthatsometimethegoalsandmeansarenotconsistent.Asurgeon’sgoalistorelievethepainofthepatient.Howeverbeforethisgoalisattained,thesurgeonmaymakethepatientfeelevenmorepainduringthetreatment.Justasthispainisworthtaken,thelowmeanswetookisasjustifiableasthegoalitself.Ofcourse,weshouldbealerttothepossibilitythatindividuals,organizationsoragovernmenttendtopleadaworthygoalinexcuseoftheircontemptiblemeansandprivateinterests.Hence,itistheresponsibilityoflaws,(governmentalorinternational)tomakeitsclauseaccurateandpropersothatsuchpossibilitiesareruledout.
Allthatdiscussedaboveindicatethatwesometimehavetoresorttolowmeansinordertoattainhighgoals.Althoughthemeansandthegoalareinconsistent,thevalueofthegoalneverdecreases.
Disagree
1.Inthefirstplace,duetothehorrendouslifecomplexityandpeople’sdiversity,itissometimesfairlyimpossibletojustifywhatagoalisworthy.Societyisahodgepodgeinthateveryindividualisdifferent,withdifferentideas,beliefs,attitudes,charactersandendlessothers.Inthequestofjudgingagoal’svalue,differentvoicesmayarise.Thuswhetherornotagoalisworthyisindeedhardtodetermine.Forexample,intheperspectivesofindustries,theythinkthattomaketheirmaximumprofitisjustifiableinthatitwillcontributetolocaleconomyandtosomeextentimprovequalitiesofpeople’slivesinthatregion.Andtheyneglecttheproblemofpollution.However,intheeyesofsomelocaldenizensandenvironmentalists,thisgoal,neglectingitsnegativeeffectstoenvironment,itutterlyunacceptable.Andinthesecampsofthought,peopledismissthegoaloftheseindustriestobedeleterious.Inthissense,aworthygoalisusuallyhardtobemade,andcompromisesfromtimetotimecomeintobeingtointercedetheneedsofthetwocamps.
2.Inthesecondplace,I’mnotdenyingtheobviousworthygoalsaroundus.TogettheNO1inclass,togetmatriculatedbyafamousuniversity,togetfairlypaidjobs,andthelike,alltheseindividualgoalscannotbedismissedasdeleterious.Infacttheyarehighlybeneficialtoeachindividual.Toalargerscope,wecanalsofindworthygoalsinoursociety.Apoliticalleadermaysethisgoalstopromotetheeconomyofhiscountry,toeradicatecrimesinsociety,topropelthebenigncompetitionamongcompaniesandsoforth.Also,thesegoalsshouldnotbeclassifiedasmaleficent.
3.However,althoughthesegoalsareworthyindeed,itdoesnotfollowthatonecanattainitbytakinganymeans.Intheprocessofattainingthesegoals,everyindividualaswellaspoliticalleadersandothersshouldbecarveintheirmindsthattheycandonothingtoharmthewelfareofothers.Therearemanyvocabularies,suchasbase,radical,pyromaniabigotryandsoon,inourmindstodepictthoseguysattainingtheirgoalswithanymeanstheycan.Weshouldalsobeawareofthathoweversublimeouroriginalgoalswouldbe,incaseweharmpeopleinthequestofpursuingourgoals,thesegoalswouldbeclassifiedasdeleterious.

3.however,althoughthesegoalsareworthyindeed,itdoesnotfollowthatonecanattainitbytakinganymeans.Intheprocessofattainingthesegoals,everyindividualaswellaspoliticalleadersandothersshouldbecarveintheirmindsthattheycandonothingtoharmthewelfareofothers.Therearemanyvocabularies,suchasbase,radical,paromaniabigotryandsoon,inourmindstodepictthoseguysattainingtheirgoalswithanymeanstheycan.Weshouldalsobeawareofthathoweversublimeouroriginalgoalswouldbe,incaseweharmpeopleinthequestofpursuingourgoals,thesegoalswouldbeclassifiedasdeleterious.
Accordingtothetitleofthestatement,Iaminclinedtorefutethetitlestatement.Aworthygoalisdifferenttopeoplewithdifferentexperienceorcharacters,peoplemayactnaturallyandfollowone’sinstinctscan,whichmeansbehaveappropriatetothesituationathand.
First,whatmeans“worthy”?
Itmaymeandifferentlytodifferentpeopleindifferentconditions.Astoaworthygoal,somepeoplemaytrytotakeanymeanstoattainit,othersmaychangetoaspireafteranotherneworbettergoaltoattainifthepreviousgoalhaslittlechancetobeattainedoritwouldspendtoomuchtimeandenergywhichtheycantotallyuseinanothercareer.PulitzerPrize-winningAmericanpoetAnneSextonstruggledwithsuicidaldepressionthroughoutmuchofheradultlife.Shecommittedsuicidein1974.Musingsondeatharepresentinmanyofherworks,ToAnneSexton,aworthygoalmaybepursuingtheaimofperfectionofLiteraryorArt,thensuicideisthewayshetriedtotaketoattainit.Ontheotherhand,manypeoplemayregardAnne’swayofpursuingasnonsenseorunworthywhichdepartsfromthestatusquo.Strangely,itisjustthoserule-breakersoriconoclastswhopersistintheirworthygoalsthatserveasourprimarycatalystsforprogress.
Eventhoughagoalisworthytoattainenough,thenstillmanythingsshouldbeconsideredbeforepeopletrytotakeanymeanstoachieveit.Ourlife,ourtimeislimited,wecanneverbesurethatallouroptimisticpredictionswouldcometrue.Sothemostwisewayistobehaveappropriatetothesituationathand.Toownanidealisthefirststeptoachieveyourgoal,buttheprocessmaybecomplicatedandunpredictable,sosometimeswefinditnecessarytochangewhatwearedoingorchangetheconceptofwhatisjustifiable.Forexample,yourdreamistogetaphDinyourpursuingyourstudies,butyourpresentsituationisthatyourfamilyarelivinginreducedcircumstancesandyourparentsaredesirousthatyoucangetajobtoreducetheburdenonthefamily.Atthispoint,whatwillyouprobably
